Lee Mauhay
It was the year 1940.
I was one of the boys who joined the Air Cadets.
The Air Cadets was a program formed by the RAF (Royal Air Force) to train boys as pilots.
At that time, we were already in the middle of World War II.
Germany, Italy, and Japan were our enemies.
We were told that Germany and Italy were already bombing England.
Japan was also bombing China and other places in Asia.
The boys who joined the Air Cadets were from different parts of Canada and some from other countries.
One of my friends, Janisch Pavlovish, was from Czechoslovakia.
He came to join us in Canada.
There were also girls who joined the Air Cadets.
One of them was Macready, a girl from Ontario, Canada, who became one of my friends.
She wanted to be a pilot just like us.
But she was given training as a radio operator instead.
In the mess hall, we sat at a table with Janisch and Macready.
We huddled around a newspaper that was already worn and crumpled from being passed around.
The headlines screamed at us: "German Bombers Devastate London's East End."
Macready's finger traced the outline of what used to be a school.
The photo showed nothing but smoking ruins.
Janisch's face darkened as he looked at the picture.
He had seen this before in Prague, his hometown.
Captain Hudson walked into the mess hall.
His boots echoed on the wooden floor.
He paused at our table and glanced down at the paper.
Without a word, he pulled up a chair and sat down beside us.
He spread out a map of England on the table.
Then he took out a red pencil and began marking places on the map. "These are all the places that have been bombed," he said quietly.
Janisch leaned forward, his voice barely above a whisper. "Captain, do you think they'll come for us here in Canada?"
Captain Hudson looked up, meeting Janisch's eyes with a steady gaze. "If they do, we'll be ready, but there's something else—there's talk of a mission that might change everything."
