I hated being a failing student.
I wasn’t meant to be this way.
I was supposed to be smart, to go to college, make a good life for myself and my family.
The problem was, I had no support.
Not from my family, anyway.
My mom worked two jobs just to keep us in our crappy little apartment.
She didn’t have the time or energy to help me with my schoolwork.
My little brother was even worse off.
He was falling behind in his classes, and I knew if someone didn’t step in, he would never catch up.
That someone was me.
I did my best to keep up with the work load, but it was difficult.
I had a job at the car wash, too, working alongside my best friends, Drake and Troy.
Sometimes I thought I’d drop from exhaustion, but I pushed on because I had to.
There was no one else to take care of my family.
Sometimes I thought about quitting school altogether, but I knew I couldn’t.
Not if I wanted a better life for myself and my family.
So I kept going, even when it felt like there was no use.
Broke & Dying
After another failed quiz in Chemistry, I stayed behind while the other students filed out of the room.
Mrs. Chen sat at her desk, grading papers.
She barely looked up when I approached.
My hands shook as I pulled the latest test scores from my backpack.
All Ds and Fs.
I stood there, still in my work uniform, my hair still damp from washing cars all day.
"I have a job," I explained.
"I help my brother with his homework every night. My mom works double shifts."
Mrs. Chen set down her red pen and really looked at me for the first time.
She opened her desk drawer and pulled out a thick packet of papers.
Broke & Dying
It was a special project on renewable energy.
If I completed it by next Friday, she said, I might be able to salvage my grade.
