It’s finally here – the day of my big fight.
I can’t believe it.
I’ve been working towards this for so long, and the entire time I’ve had one goal in mind: to make it to the Olympics.
My father and I have been working towards that goal since I was five years old.
When I started boxing, it was simply a way for me to stay active and have fun.
I never thought I would take it as far as I have, but the more I trained, the more I fell in love with it.
It wasn’t until I was a little older that I realized just how much I wanted to go all the way – all the way to the Olympics and bring home a gold medal for myself and for my country, America.
I know it won’t be easy.
I’ll have to put in so much time and effort, not to mention all the sacrifices I will have to make along the way.
I’ve already had to give up so much: my social life, time with my friends and family, even my own birthday celebration this year.
My best friend Ali tried to get me to take a break and celebrate with her, but I knew I couldn’t.
Not when there was so much on the line.
Fighting for Laila
I stand in the locker room, methodically wrapping my hands as Coach Billy checks each loop.
The familiar ritual calms my nerves, and I can hear the distant roar of the crowd through the concrete walls.
My father’s calloused fingers guide the wraps with practiced precision, just as he's done countless times before.
When he slides the gloves onto my hands, I flex my fingers inside the leather, testing the fit.
He tightens the laces with sharp tugs, securing each glove until they feel like extensions of my arms.
Fighting for Laila
I throw a few practice jabs at the air, the satisfying weight of the gloves grounding me in this moment.
