I was walking down the street of Houston. As I walked to my house, which was a few minutes' walk away, I see blood on the ground, on the street. I was shocked. I called 911 but no one answered. I didn't know, at the time, that it was the start of the zombie apocalypse.
Alexandra
She is a young professional living in a small house in Houston. She is resourceful, brave, and determined. Alexandra grew up in a foster home and always felt like an outsider. On a typical day,she discovered blood on the street and a body nearby. Confused, she called 911 but got no answer. As more bloodied figures appeared, she realized something was terribly wrong. Her house had a secure room where she could lock herself in during emergencies.
Brandon
He is Alexandra's boyfriend and lives nearby. He is protective, quickthinking, and resourceful. Brandon arrived shortly after Tom's disappearance to find Alexandra shaken but alive. He helped secure the safe room and took charge of defending their home as infected individuals entered the neighborhood. Despite being outnumbered,he fought bravely to keep Alexandra safe. His bravery allowed them to lock themselves inside just as the apocalypse unfolded outside their doorstep.
Tom
He is a neighbor living near Alexandra's house. He is friendly, concerned, and brave. Tom noticed Alexandra's confusion and helped her by calling 911 when she couldn't reach them. As they walked back to Alexandra's house, they saw more bloodied figures emerging. Tom suggested they get inside quickly as shots were fired. He attempted to enter the secure room with Alexandra but was attacked by an infected outside, allowing him to the safety of the room just in time.
I was walking down the street, going back to my house, which was only about a three-minute walk.
When I got to the end of my street, I saw something that made me stop in my tracks and almost slip those few feet.
There was blood all over the street and the sidewalk.
I looked up and saw that there was a body lying on the ground with even more blood surrounding it.
I quickly grabbed my cell phone out of my purse and called 911.
However, when I went to dial those three simple numbers, I realized that I had no signal at all.
I kept trying, thinking that maybe it was just an area where there was no service.
I sprinted towards my house, Tom and Brandon right on my tail.
When I got to the middle of the street, I saw even more bloodied figures.
They were all lying on the ground, but they weren’t moving.
I was trying not to look at them too much, but I could tell that they were dead.
"Come on, we need to get out of here," Tom yelled from behind me.
"We’re almost there," I yelled back.
We got to my front door, and I fumbled around in my purse for my keys.
My hands were shaking so badly that it took me a few tries to get the key in the lock.
As soon as we were inside, I slammed the door shut and locked it.
I ran into the living room and grabbed the landline phone off of the coffee table.
I dialed 911 again, but it was dead too. "No, no, no," I mumbled to myself as I slammed the receiver down onto the table.
"What’s wrong?"
Brandon asked as he came into the living room with Tom right behind him.
"The landline is dead too," I told him.
"Maybe there’s a backup phone in the secure room," Tom suggested.
"Yeah, that’s a good idea," I agreed as I started walking towards the hallway where the secure room was located.
I opened every door that we passed and locked it behind us so that no one could follow us into the house.
We got to the door for the secure room, and I unlocked it before pushing it open. The room was small and had no windows.
Inside, a single red light blinked ominously on the control panel.
