When I was in the seventh grade, I met Elvis Presley.
He was one year older than me and in a different class, but we became friends because I stood up for him when the bullies came after him.
Elvis was a teenager, just like all the rest of us, but he was different.
He had a special gift, a voice that could move mountains, and he loved music more than anything in the world.
I think that's why they picked on him.
They were jealous of his talent and angry that he wouldn't give in to their demands.
They wanted him to be just like them: ordinary.
But Elvis Presley would never be ordinary.
That day in school changed everything for both of us.
Elvis asked me to be his friend, and I accepted.
I didn't know that my life would never be the same after that, but I was grateful for the friendship.
Elvis came from a poor family and didn't have much, but he always gave what he could to those who needed help.
That's why I loved him so much.
We were inseparable until we went our separate ways after high school.
Years later, when Elvis became famous, he called me and asked me to come work for him.
I accepted immediately because I loved him so much.
Burning Love
I pull my weathered Chevy into Graceland's long driveway, gripping the steering wheel tighter as the mansion's white columns come into view.
The security guard checks my ID against his list, nods, and waves me through.
As I approach the house, I spot Jerry Schilling's tall figure by the front gate, hands in his pocket, looking casual in a blue button-down shirt and dark slacks.
He hasn't noticed me yet.
I park near the entrance, take a moment to smooth my hair in the rearview mirror, and collect my thoughts.
Burning Love
My hands shake slightly as I gather my purse and small suitcase.
"Hey, Jerry," I call out, stepping onto the gravel path.
"Well, if it isn't the woman herself," Jerry replies with a grin, but there's a hint of something serious in his eyes.
"Elvis has been waiting for you; he says there's something important he needs to tell you."
