I was a man who needed work and solitude, and what I got was hard work and the craziest crew in the province.
The job was shooting for one of Dangerous Dan’s crews.
Dan was the most dangerous man in the province, maybe even in the country.
He had no trouble finding men willing to work for him, even with his reputation.
Even with the rumors about what happened to men who crossed him, like Tom, like my brother.
There were always men looking for a big paycheque, willing to take the risk.
Men like me.
I’d joined Wade and Hector on Bub’s crew.
Bub was rough-talking and as mean as they came, but he was quiet, too, and I liked that.
He didn’t talk unless he had something worth saying.
He also had a big heart and took me under his wing when I joined the crew.
I liked him for that and appreciated his loyalty to Dan.
Not all men would have stuck with a boss like Dan after all the rumors started.
I also liked roughtalking Bub because he didn’t seem to care that I was a little odd, too.
My mind worked differently than other men’s.
Sometimes my thoughts were so big and overwhelming that I needed quiet and alone time to sort them out in my head.
Dangerous
During our lunch break, we sat behind the loader, away from the noise of the machinery.
I pulled out my sandwich and unwrapped it, watching Wade pull out his food and eat it in two bites.
Hector was slower to unpack his lunch box.
He pulled out a thermos of tea, a sandwich, a bag of chips, and an apple.
He took a bite of his sandwich, then a sip of tea.
The question had been gnawing at me all morning.
I had to ask.
"So what’s it like working for Dan?"
Wade smiled big.
"Oh man, you’ll love him. He’s the best boss I’ve ever had."
Dangerous
I looked at Hector, who was chewing his food slowly.
He didn’t say anything.
"He’s tough," Wade said.
"He expects us to meet our deadlines. But he’s fair. And he pays well."
He took another bite of his sandwich and chewed it with his mouth open so I could see the food inside.
"He’s also funny. He makes me laugh every day."
"Does he ever ask you to do things that aren’t safe?"
I asked. Wade laughed again.
"Oh yeah. All the time. But that’s just part of the job. You know how it is."
I didn’t know how it was.
I’d never worked on a logging crew before, but I knew that there were rules about safety that needed to be followed or else people got hurt or killed.
Wade seemed to think that was funny, too.
"Sometimes he asks us to do things that are impossible," he said.
"Like when we’re running behind schedule and he wants us to work faster. Or when we need to get a load of logs out but there’s no way to get them out safely. He always finds a way."
I looked at Hector again, who was still chewing his food slowly.
"What about you?"
I asked him.
"Do you like working for Dan?"
Hector swallowed his food and took another sip of tea before answering.
"I like working for Bub," he said quietly.
Dangerous
"And Tom."
Wade stopped smiling when Hector said Tom’s name.
