"Sign up here!"
I stared down at the long row of paper slips on the cafeteria table and swallowed hard.
Only one spot left.
And it was for prom queen.
The last available slot was right next to Tiffany Falconer’s name.
I could feel her cold gaze on me even now, about a week later, as I hovered over the sign-up sheet.
The senior class of Shadyside High School was finally having its prom, and Vice Principal Brekenridge had announced that this year would be different.
This year, Shadyside would reinvent itself.
No one believed it, but everyone was excited to have their prom anyway.
As it turned out, only three people signed up to run for prom queen: Tiffany, Christy Renault, and me, Lori Granger.
I’d filled out my slip in secret, knowing no one would let me sign up if they found out.
Not that anyone really wanted to be friends with me anyway.
Not since the incident.
But I was innocent, just like my mom.
Completely innocent.
But who was going to believe that?
"Are you going to sign up or not?"
A hand touched my shoulder, and I jumped back, startled.
It was Megan Rogers, my best friend—and the only one who treated me like a normal person these days.
"I…yes."
I took the pen from her hand and signed my name on the last available slip.

As my grin faded, Megan’s smile grew wider.
"Come on, Lori. You got this."
She grabbed my hand and pulled me away from the table.
We walked down the crowded hallway, weaving past students who stared at me and whispered to each other.
I kept my head down, trying to ignore them.
But it was hard to pretend I didn’t see Tiffany glaring at me from her table of friends, the Wolfpack.
The group of girls had been the most popular in our class since freshman year, and they were known for bullying anyone who got in their way.
Tiffany was their leader, and she had it out for me.
"Hey!"
Megan nudged me with her elbow.
"You’re not going to let them get to you, are you?"
I sighed and shook my head.

"I just wish I could go back in time and change everything."
Megan squeezed my hand.
"You can’t. But you can make a difference now. You can show everyone that you’re not what they think you are."
I looked at her skeptically.
"How am I supposed to do that?"
She grinned mischievously.
"Well, first things first, we need to get you ready for the prom queen race. And that means no more hiding in your shell."
I groaned.
"You know I hate being the center of attention."
Megan rolled her eyes.
"Come on, Lori. You used to be so outgoing. Remember when we were freshmen and you stood up to Tiffany for picking on that kid in gym class?" I couldn’t help but smile at the memory.
"Yeah, but that was before…"
I trailed off, not wanting to bring up the incident again.
Megan squeezed my hand again.
"I know. But you can’t let it define you. You have to show everyone that you’re still the same person you’ve always been."
I took a deep breath and nodded.
"You’re right. I just need to be brave like I used to be."
Megan grinned wider.
"That’s the spirit! Now let’s get ready for this prom queen race and show everyone what we’re made of."
We stopped at my locker so I could grab my books for class, and Megan handed me a small piece of paper with something written on it.
"What’s this?"
I asked as I took it from her hand.
"Just something I thought might help," she said with a wink.
I unfolded the paper and read the note she’d written: "You are strong and capable. Believe in yourself."
