I was a little surprised when my ten-year-old daughter, Emma, suggested we swap ages.
I mean, I’d heard of trading places, like in that movie with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, but I had no idea it was actually possible.
But before I could tell Emma that it was just a figure of speech, she jumped up from the kitchen table and ran out of the room.
"Wait," I said to no one.
"What about dinner?"
I heard the garage door open and close, then the back door.
"Mom!"
Emma called.
I sighed and got up to make dinner.
When I got to the kitchen, Ava, Jen’s fifteen-year-old daughter, was sitting at the table with a legal pad and a pencil.
Jen was my best friend and former college roommate.
Her husband, Caleb, owned a professional sports team in California, and they spent most of their time there.
Ava usually spent the school year with her older brother, Sam, at the University in Fairbanks, but this year she was doing online high school from their vacation home in California.
When Jen suggested that I take Ava for the week, I jumped at the chance.
It would be nice to have some help with Emma.
"What’s with dinner?" Ava asked.
