I was pacing back and forth in my cell when I heard the clanging of the metal food cart and the murmur of voices of the guards as they made their way down the corridor.
It was time for dinner, but I wasn’t hungry.
I’d lost my appetite weeks ago, and even the smell of cooked meat wafting from the cart made my stomach turn.
I’d been in this maximum-security women’s prison for almost two years, and even though I’d tried to make the best of it, I was beginning to lose hope.
The steel door slid open, and a voice called out, "Alex?"
I turned to see one of the guards standing there with a tray in her hands.
It was Samantha, one of the few guards who didn’t treat us as if we were less than human.
"Come here," she said softly, placing the tray on the metal table bolted to the floor.
I walked over and took the tray from her.
As I looked down at the food, I saw that it was a real meal, not the usual institutional garbage.
"Thank you," I said quietly.
"You’re welcome," she replied.
As she turned to leave, I asked, "Can I talk to you for a minute?"
She stopped and turned back, looking wary.
"What is it?"
