I was walking endlessly with my brother.
We were searching for what happened and how we got separated from our family & ancestors.
We were walking in the plains & sometimes in the mountains.
The journey was never ending.
Sometimes I thought that I was walking in a circle.
But my brother motivated me, saying that we would find the answers soon.
I didn't know what soon meant, but I continued walking with him.
Sometimes I thought that maybe we should go back home.
But then I thought that there was no home for us.
We didn't know anything about our family & ancestors.
But I still had hope inside me that one day we would find them.
I didn't know how but I had a strong faith that we would find them.
I had a strong faith in myself, my brother, and the universe.
I knew that I was not wrong.
I just needed to continue my journey with my brother until we found the answers and my surviving family & ancestors who were still alive somewhere in this world.
"Hello," said my brother, breaking the silence.
"Yes," I replied him, looking at him.
"How are you?"
"I am fine, thank you."
"What about you?"
"I am also fine."
I noticed his footsteps slowing down beside me.
The afternoon sun was beating down on our backs as we trudged through the knee-high grass.
He raised his hand, signaling me to stop, then shielded his eyes from the glare.
His gaze swept methodically across the distant plains, from the scattered bushes to our left to the rocky outcrops on our right.
A flock of birds took flight in the distance, drawing his attention.
He squinted, focusing on something I couldn't see.
"Lana," he whispered, not taking his eyes off the horizon, "I think I saw movement near those rocks."
I crouched down beside him, following his pointing finger to a cluster of gray rocks jutting out from the earth.
The heat made the air shimmer, distorting the shapes that moved between the boulders.
I couldn't make out anything clearly.
My brother grabbed my arm and pulled me lower, gesturing for us to crawl forward through the grass.
The stems poked at my face and caught in my hair, but I kept my eyes fixed on the rocks.
Twenty yards closer, I could make out what looked like a tail disappearing behind one of the boulders.
My brother whispered something about checking it out, but I held his arm to stop him.
We had learned our lesson last time we came across unknown creatures in the wild.
"Lana, we can't keep running from every shadow," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
"But what if it's dangerous?" I replied, my grip on his arm tightening.
"Or what if it's the key to finding our family?" he countered, determination etched in his eyes.
I inch forward on my elbows, my brother close behind.
The dry stalks scratch against my arms as we crawl through the grass.
Our target is a boulder that juts out from the earth, its surface weathered to a moss-covered gray.
We had seen movement there before we dropped to our bellies, and I'm determined to get a better look.
As we approach, my heart pounds in my chest.
A small shadow flickers at the base of the rock.
My brother tenses beside me, ready to bolt if necessary.
I reach out and grab his arm, reminding him of his own words: no more running.
We freeze as something rustles in a patch of weeds nearby.
Through the swaying grass, I catch a glimpse of bright color darting between the stones.
Keeping my body low to the ground, I slide forward on my stomach while my brother watches anxiously from behind.
The colorful shape becomes clearer - something smooth and metallic catching sunlight between the rocks.
I can't make out what it is, but it's definitely not an animal.
My fingers tremble as I stretch my arm through a gap in the stones.
The object seems just out of reach.
Pebbles shift under my weight as I push myself closer, ignoring the rough ground scraping my arms.
My brother whispers a warning to be careful, but I'm focused entirely on bridging those final inches.
"Lana, wait," he murmured urgently, "what if it's a trap?"
I paused, my fingers hovering above the object, and whispered back, "Then why would they leave it in plain sight?"
"Maybe because they knew we'd be desperate enough to take the bait," he replied, his voice tinged with caution.
I stretch my arm between the rocks, fingertips brushing cold metal.
My brother shifts anxiously behind me, whispering another warning.
The object feels smooth, curved, about the size of my palm.
Pebbles clatter as I wiggle it loose, scraping my knuckles raw against the stone.
A sharp edge catches my sleeve, tearing fabric.
My brother grabs my ankle, ready to pull me back at the first sign of danger.
The metal grows warmer in my grip as I work it free, revealing intricate engravings along its surface.
I turn, startled, as a voice calls out, "Need help with that?"
My brother tenses, gripping my ankle tighter.
I glance up to see a stranger standing at the edge of the clearing.
He's dressed in worn jeans and a faded T-shirt, with a backpack slung over his shoulder.
He extends a hand toward the object I'm holding.
I hesitate, unsure if I should trust him.
But he seems calm and patient, so I slowly stand and take a few steps forward.
The stranger smiles and waits for me to approach.
As I draw closer, he says, "That looks like it could use some cleaning."
I glance down at the object in my hand and realize how d##y it is from being buried among the rocks.
I nod, still cautious but willing to let him help. The stranger reaches into his backpack and pulls out a cloth, then gently takes the object from my hand.
He begins to wipe away the dirt and grime, revealing more of the intricate engravings on its surface.
As he works, he asks me questions about where I found it and what it was doing there.
I explain how my brother and I had been exploring and stumbled upon it hidden among the rocks.
He nods thoughtfully as he continues to clean it.
When he's finished, he hands it back to me and says, "There you go. It looks much better now."
I thank him for his help and turn to leave, but he stops me with another question.
"Who are you?" he asks curiously.
I pause for a moment before answering.
"I'm the one who found it," I reply, gripping the object tighter as I step back into the shadows.
I pocket the object and continue with my brother, scanning the ground for any other hidden treasures.
We move slowly, our eyes scanning the rocks and crevices for any glint of metal or other clues.
My brother suddenly points to a small crack in the stone nearby, where something shiny catches the light.
"Look," he whispers urgently, "there's another one."
We creep closer, our hearts pounding in unison as we examine the new discovery.
It's another metallic item, partially buried in the dirt and pebbles.
I carefully extract a stick from my bag and use it to probe the area around the object, making sure there are no traps or hidden dangers.
My brother watches my back, his eyes darting around for any signs of movement or threats.
As I gently pry the object loose from its resting place, my brother can't help but let out a triumphant whoop of excitement.
We sit down on the dusty ground, turning the new metallic item over in our hands.
We examine it from every angle, searching for any clues or markings that might tell us more about where it came from.
My brother points to a small symbol etched near the edge of the object, and I trace it with my finger, feeling the grooves in the metal.
I compare it to the first object we found, noticing similarities in the engravings and patterns.
As I brush away more dirt and debris from the surface, I notice a slight indentation along one side.
I press down on it gently, and there's a soft click as a hidden compartment opens.
Inside, I find a folded piece of paper.
I unfold the paper with trembling hands, my brother leaning in close to see what it is.
As I smooth out the creases, the paper suddenly shifts and folds itself into a tiny origami bird.
It flutters up into the air, hovering between us.
My brother and I exchange wide-eyed glances, stunned by the transformation.
The bird chirps softly, its voice clear and melodic as it hovers in front of us.
I reach out a hand cautiously, but it darts away, circling around our heads.
My brother whispers, "Do you think it might lead us to our family?"
I nod slowly, watching the bird's movements as it flutters and dances in the air.
With a shared breath of resolve, we rise and follow the bird into the unknown.
We follow the origami bird as it flutters ahead of us, its bright colors contrasting against the dull backdrop of the dense forest.
My brother and I move swiftly, dodging low-hanging branches and leaping over fallen logs.
The bird leads us through a maze of twisting paths and thick foliage, its chirps echoing softly in the air.
I keep my eyes fixed on the bird, my heart pounding with a mix of excitement and caution.
We push deeper into the woods, our senses heightened as we navigate the unfamiliar terrain.
The bird darts between trees, leading us to a narrow path that winds its way up a steep hill.
My brother points it out to me, and we quicken our pace to keep up with the bird's swift movements.
As we ascend the hill, the air grows thick with humidity, and beads of sweat trickle down our foreheads.
We pause for a moment to catch our breath, watching as the bird perches on a nearby tree branch.
"Do you think it's trying to show us something up there?" my brother asks, wiping his brow.
"Maybe," I reply, squinting at the bird, "but why would it choose us to follow?"
He shrugs, glancing around nervously, "Perhaps it knows something we don't—something about Mom and Dad."
We follow the bird as it flutters higher, leading us to a hidden path that veers off to the side.
The path is almost invisible, covered in dense undergrowth and overgrown with vines.
My brother and I push through the thick foliage, our footsteps quiet on the soft earth.
The bird chirps again, guiding us forward as we make our way deeper into the forest.
We walk for what feels like hours, the sun dipping lower in the sky.
The air cools slightly, carrying a hint of dampness from a nearby stream.
As we round a bend in the path, we come to a fork in the road.
The bird hovers in front of us, its wings beating rapidly as it darts back and forth between the two paths.
I furrow my brow, unsure which direction to take.
My brother looks at me with uncertainty, "Do you think it's trying to tell us something?"
"I don't know," I reply, studying the bird's movements.
"Maybe it's giving us a choice."
He nods thoughtfully, "If we split up, we can cover more ground."
I shake my head firmly, "No, we stay together. We can't risk losing each other now."
He sighs but agrees with me.
We watch as the bird flies down one of the paths, disappearing from view.
Without hesitation, we follow after it. The path winds its way through a thicket of brambles and thorns, forcing us to push aside branches and fight our way through the dense undergrowth.
The air grows colder and darker as we move further into the woods.
I can feel a strange energy pulsing through the trees, making my skin prickle with unease.
My brother glances at me nervously, his voice barely above a whisper as he asks if we should turn back.
But I press on, determined to follow the bird wherever it leads.
As we continue down the winding path, I notice that the trees around us are becoming taller and closer together.
The canopy overhead grows thicker, casting long shadows across the forest floor.
I quicken my pace, my senses on high alert as I scan our surroundings for any signs of danger.
Suddenly, the bird darts ahead of us once more, flying swiftly toward a clearing in the distance.
We break into a run, our footsteps pounding against the earth as we chase after it. As we burst through the trees and into the clearing, I catch sight of a shimmering pool of water nestled among the rocks.
The origami bird hovers above the pool, its reflection rippling in the water, as if inviting us to take the next step into a world we never imagined.
I kneel down at the edge of the pool, reaching out a trembling hand to touch the surface of the water.
The cool liquid ripples beneath my fingertips, causing the bird's reflection to distort and ripple.
My brother stands behind me, his shadow stretching across the water.
As I pull my hand back, the bird chirps one last time before diving headfirst into the pool.
It disappears beneath the surface, leaving behind a trail of ripples that slowly fade away.
My brother kneels down beside me, and we watch in silence as the water settles back into its glassy calmness.
We stand there, staring at the still water, wondering what just happened.
The bird had led us here, and now it was gone.
I glance at my brother, and he looks back at me with a mix of confusion and curiosity in his eyes.
We both take a deep breath, feeling the cool air fill our lungs.
I nod to my brother, and he grips my hand tightly.
We step closer to the edge of the pool, hesitating for a moment before dipping our toes into the water.
It's cold, but not icy.
Slowly, we lower ourselves into the pool, the water rising up our legs and then our chests.
As we submerge further, I notice a faint glow beneath the surface.
The glow intensifies, enveloping us in a warm, otherworldly light as we are pulled into the depths.
