I lost another football bet to my sons.
I don’t know how they do it.
I’m not a bad picker, but those two have the luck of the Irish.
I don’t know whether to be proud of them or ship them off to Vegas as juveniles.
Either way, I’m screwed, and I have to pay the price.
Literally.
They picked a horrible bet this time, and I’m not looking forward to my punishment.
"Okay, guys, what’s the damage?"
I asked as we sat in the living room after the game.
It was a close one, and I’d thought for sure my pick would win, but no such luck.
My oldest son grinned at me, and I knew I was in for it.
"Dad, you know we love you, right?"
Son1 said.
I nodded, knowing where this was going.
"And we’re not trying to be mean or gross you out or anything…"
Son2 trailed off, but I knew what was coming.
There was only one thing they could have come up with that would fit all that criteria, and I wasn’t looking forward to it.
"You have to get your hair cut like your favorite player now," Son1 said triumphantly.
I groaned and fell back against the couch cushions.
The Bet
I slump deeper into the couch, and they exchange victorious high-fives.
They pull out their phones and start showing me pictures of my favorite player’s signature hairstyle.
It’s a hideous bowl cut with zigzag patterns shaved into the sides.
Son1 already has the barber shop’s number pulled up on his phone.
"I’m not doing it," I whine, knowing it’s no use.
"Come on, Dad. It’ll be fun," Son2 says, and I can hear the laughter in his voice.
I try to bargain with them.
"Fine, I lost. I’ll clean your rooms for a month."
"Nope," Son1 says.
"I’ll make you dinner every night for a month."
The Bet
"Nope," Son2 says again.
"I’ll even wear a jersey from our rival team to the next game."
They both shake their heads, and I know I’m beat.
They show me more pictures of the haircut from different angles, and I groan again.
Son2 gets up and grabs my car keys from the coffee table.
The Bet
He dangles them in front of me, just out of reach.
