I don't like loud noises.
I don't like crowds.
I like my routines and my rituals, and I like knowing what will happen next.
I'm not a complicated person.
I don't want much out of life.
Just a few simple things:
A place to call home.
People who care about me.
A chance to do my own thing and make my own decisions.
Not many people can say they got all that and mean it, but I can, and I do, every single day.
I'm grateful, truly grateful, for all the blessings in my life.
And I'm grateful for my three Nannies: Sue, Maira, and Janet.
They are the reason I have all those things I listed above.
They are the reason I have a home, a family, and a chance to live my life as I see fit.
I don't know what I would do without them, and thankfully, I will never have to find out.
I love them almost as much as I loved my parents.
Almost.
But that's not fair, because it's different.
They each bring different things to the table, and together they are whole, complete, perfect.
Nana Sue is patient and kind, gentle and soft.
She is the one who comforts me when I am down, who calms my nerves when I am anxious.
The Nanny Plan
Nana Maira is the one who pushes me to be my best self, to do things I never thought I could do.
She is the one who encourages me to be brave and to face my fears.
Nana Janet is the one who keeps us all laughing.
She is the one who makes us feel like we are part of something bigger than ourselves, and that we can conquer anything as long as we are together.
I'm not sure how I would have turned out if they hadn't found me, but I know it wouldn't have been good.
I'm not sure I would have survived.
I sit on the edge of my bed, rocking back and forth.
Thunder crashes outside my window, and I close my eyes tightly as lightning flashes behind my eyelids.
The storm is making my heart race faster with each passing moment.
I can hear the thunder in my ears, even with my hands over them.
The Nanny Plan
It's too loud, too much, and I rock faster, trying to make it go away. I hear footsteps in the hall outside my room, slow and careful, but I know who it is before she even reaches my door.
Nana Sue always moves like that when she knows I'm upset or scared or overwhelmed.
She knows that if she moves too fast or makes too much noise, it will only make things worse for me.
I hear her stop in the doorway, and then a second later, she says my name softly.
"Emmy."
The Nanny Plan
I don't answer her, but she doesn't expect me to.
Instead, she moves forward slowly, giving me plenty of time to see her coming.
She has something in her arms—a dark bundle—and as she gets closer, I realize it's my weighted blanket.
