I was born again.
I was reincarnated.
At first, I didn’t even realize it.
But as I grew older, I began to understand that it wasn’t just a coincidence.
That everything about me was different from everyone else.
My hair was white.
My eyes were red.
And I never spoke.
Not once, since the day I was born.
I didn’t need to.
Everyone already knew what I was before I even opened my mouth.
A nobody.
The fourth child of a noble family, where the firstborn would inherit the throne and all the wealth and power that came with it.
So why bother speaking?
No one was even going to listen.
I was a ghost.
Invisible and silent.
A mere shadow of a person, slipping through the cracks of society unnoticed.
Until the day I turned three, that is.
When suddenly, without warning, I stood up and walked out of the room on my own, without any support whatsoever, just like any normal three-year-old would do…
And then flew right over the heads of my parents and their guests who were visiting for dinner.
Hovering near the ceiling, I watched my parents and their guests freeze in place below me, their wine glasses clattering against the mahogany table as they tried to process what they were seeing.
I didn’t know what to do.
I just kept floating there, staring at them with wide eyes.
But then I saw my chance.
They were all so shocked that no one was paying attention to anything but me.
So while I still had the chance, I drifted over towards the shadows of the grand chandelier that hung from the ceiling, and then slipped into the darkness behind it.
And then, without even thinking about it, my body became translucent.
It was a reflexive action that I couldn’t control.
Anytime I was frightened or startled, my body would automatically become invisible.
It was a skill that I had been born with, one that allowed me to hide myself from the world whenever I wanted to. And now, as I hovered in the shadows of the chandelier, watching my parents and their guests below me, I realized that no one could see me anymore.
They were all still staring up at where I had been a moment before, confused and disbelieving.
And then they started talking.
"What just happened?"
Father asked, his voice steady and calm as he set his glass down on the table in front of him.
"I don’t know," Mother replied, her voice trembling slightly as she reached out to grab onto Father’s arm for support.
"It looked like she was flying," one of their guests said, her voice full of wonder.
"But that’s impossible," another guest said, shaking his head in disbelief.
"She must have been hallucinating."
"No," Mother said firmly, her grip on Father’s arm tightening as she spoke.
"I saw it too. She was definitely flying."
The room fell silent as everyone digested this information. And then Father spoke up again. "Well," he said calmly, "it seems we have a bit of a situation on our hands."
He turned to one of the servants who was standing nearby and gave him a nod. "Go search the room," he ordered. "Find our daughter."
The servant bowed and hurried off to do as he was told.
And then Father turned back to his guests and smiled politely at them. "I apologize for this interruption," he said smoothly. "Please, continue eating. We will be back shortly."
The guests nodded and began eating again, but they were all clearly distracted by what had just happened.
And as for Mother…
she whispered to Father, "Do you think she could be... the one from the prophecy?"
Father hesitated, glancing around to ensure no one else was listening. "If she is," he replied quietly, "then everything changes."
