Jiung
I stared at the pink stick in my hand as if it would change colors before my eyes.
One line.
I was only three weeks pregnant!
I couldn't believe it, and I felt like my world was spinning around me.
I had been working at a 24-hour convenience store for a while now, and my boyfriend, Taehyun, also worked there until a month ago.
He left his job to work somewhere else, but I didn't know exactly where.
We were both 19 years old, Korean, and men could get pregnant in our world.
But I was still shocked to find out that I was pregnant.
I felt happy, but also scared and confused.
I didn't know what to do, and I was scared because of the recent news about zombies.
They were real and had started showing up in different areas of the city.
The government had sent out troops to take care of them, but they were having a hard time keeping them under control.
Many people had died, and some had even turned into zombies themselves after being bitten.
I couldn't imagine what would happen if a zombie showed up at the convenience store where I worked.
Would I be able to get away from it?
Boyfriend Material
During my night shift, the fluorescent lights flickered above me as I stacked cans of soda onto the shelves near the entrance.
It was a slow night, and I was trying to get as much work done as possible before the morning rush.
The store was quiet, except for the occasional sound of cars driving by outside.
I was so focused on my task that I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary until a shadow fell across the glass door.
I froze, my heart pounding in my chest.
I looked up and saw a figure standing on the other side of the door, its features distorted through the foggy glass.
I couldn't make out its face, but I could see its broad shoulders and messy hair.
My heart raced even faster as I realized who it was.
It was Taehyun!
But something was wrong with him.
Boyfriend Material
He wasn't moving like he normally did.
His movements were jerky and unnatural, like he was being controlled by someone else.
I watched in horror as he pressed his hands against the glass door, leaving behind smeared handprints. He looked... different.
His skin had turned gray and dark veins spidered across his face.
His eyes were cloudy and vacant, like he was dead.
And then it hit me - he was dead!
Taehyun had become a zombie!
I couldn't believe it, but there was no denying what I saw in front of me.
He continued to press against the door, his hands leaving behind smears of blood and dirt.
I knew that if he got inside, he would attack me without hesitation.
Boyfriend Material
I had to get away from him!
But before I could move, our eyes met through the glass door.
And for a moment, I thought I saw something in his dead eyes - recognition?
Then, with a sudden burst of determination, I turned and ran towards the back exit, leaving behind everything I once knew.
I huddle behind the counter, my hands trembling on my still-flat stomach as Taehyun's shuffling footsteps echo through the store.
The automatic door slides shut behind him with a soft hiss.
Glass bottles clink as he bumps into a display, but he doesn't lunge or growl like the zombies I've seen on TV.
He just stands there, swaying slightly, his bloodied hands hanging limp at his sides.
When I dare to peek around the counter, his clouded eyes fix on me.
He takes one stumbling step forward, then another.
But he stops just feet away, swaying like a drunken man.
His face is twisted into a grotesque grimace, his mouth hanging open in a silent scream.
Blood and dirt stain his clothes and skin, and his once neat hair is now matted and wild.
Despite his monstrous appearance, he doesn't attack me like I expect him to.
He just stands there, staring at me with empty eyes. My heart pounds against my ribs as I slowly rise to my feet.
My hand trembles as I reach for the baseball bat leaning against the wall behind me.
Boyfriend Material
Taehyun's voice, raspy and broken, cuts through the silence.
"Jiung... remember... our promise?"
I lower the bat, my heart aching as I whisper back, "I remember, Taehyun, but how can I help you now?"
Boyfriend Material
I watch him from behind the counter, my baseball bat at the ready.
His movements are slow and unsteady as he shuffles down the aisle, knocking over cans of food and bottles of water.
Each time he stumbles, I flinch, bracing myself for his attack.
But he doesn't seem to notice me anymore.
He keeps moving forward, his empty eyes fixed on some unknown point in front of him.
As he approaches the counter, I tighten my grip on the bat.
If he gets too close, I'll have to defend myself.
I can't let him hurt me or our unborn child.
Just as he's about to reach the counter, his head jerks up and our eyes meet again.
"Jiung," he whispers, his voice barely audible.
It's a haunting echo of the man I once knew.
Suddenly, his legs give out and he collapses to the floor with a sickening thud.
Boyfriend Material
I freeze, my heart pounding in my chest.
I want to run away, but something holds me back. Slowly, I step around the counter and approach him cautiously.
He lies there unmoving, his eyes still fixed on me.
I stop a few feet away from him and hesitate.
Should I try to help him?
Or should I run away while I still can?
The thought of leaving him here alone is unbearable.
Despite everything that's happened, he's still Taehyun, the man I love.
I take another step forward and crouch down beside him.
His skin is cold and gray, like stone.
I reach out a trembling hand and touch his arm gently.
He doesn't respond, but his eyes follow my movement.
I swallow hard and whisper his name again, "Taehyun."
Boyfriend Material
I glance around the store, searching for any sign of the medicine.
My eyes scan the shelves and counters, but I don't see it anywhere.
I know it has to be here somewhere, but where?
I look down at Taehyun's lifeless body and feel a surge of determination.
I have to find that medicine.
I slowly rise to my feet and walk towards the backroom.
The door is slightly ajar, and I push it open with a creak.
The room is dimly lit, with only a single light bulb hanging from the ceiling.
Shelves line the walls, stacked high with boxes and supplies.
I scan the shelves, searching for any sign of the medicine.
My eyes land on a stack of boxes in the corner, partially hidden by a tarp.
I walk over and lift up the tarp, revealing a small container hidden underneath.
Boyfriend Material
I pull out the container and examine it carefully.
It's labeled "Zombie Restoration Medicine" in bold letters. My heart leaps with excitement as I open the container and pull out a syringe filled with clear liquid.
This must be it!
I turn around and walk back into the main room, where Taehyun still lies motionless on the floor.
His eyes follow me as I approach him, but he doesn't move or speak.
I kneel down beside him and examine the syringe more closely.
There's a small instruction manual attached to the side of the container, and I read through it quickly.
The instructions are simple: inject 1cc of the medicine into the patient's arm, then wait 30 minutes for it to take effect.
If there's no response after 30 minutes, repeat the process until successful restoration is achieved.
I take a deep breath and prepare to administer the medicine.
Taehyun's eyes watch me intently as I insert the needle into his arm and slowly press down on the plunger. The liquid flows smoothly into his veins, and I wait anxiously for some sign of response.
But he remains still, his eyes fixed on me without any emotion.
I wait for what feels like an eternity before pulling out my phone to check the time.
Twenty-five minutes have passed since I administered the medicine, but there's still no change in Taehyun's condition. My heart sinks as I realize that maybe this medicine isn't going to work after all.
But then, just as I'm about to give up hope, Taehyun's eyes slowly close shut.
Boyfriend Material
I watch anxiously as his chest rises and falls with each shallow breath.
Minutes tick by, and I sit there frozen, my hand resting on his cold arm.
Suddenly, his eyes snap open, clearer than before.
He blinks rapidly, confusion etched across his face.
I hold my breath as he tries to sit up, his movements slow and shaky.
I reach out a hand to help him, and he grasps it tightly.
His eyes lock onto mine, filled with a mix of recognition and fear.
"Jiung," he whispers hoarsely, his voice barely audible.
I nod slowly, tears welling up in my eyes as I realize that he's coming back to me.
"Our unborn baby," he says again, his voice cracking with emotion.
I nod again, unable to speak as the weight of our situation crashes down on me.
Boyfriend Material
I help Taehyun to his feet, and we take cautious steps towards the entrance of the convenience store.
The bright sunlight stings our eyes after being confined in the dim interior.
As we move towards my family's house, a sudden movement catches my attention.
A zombie emerges from an alleyway, its eyes fixed on me.
I freeze, clutching Taehyun's hand tightly.
The zombie lunges forward, and without thinking, I pull Taehyun backward towards the entrance of the convenience store.
He stumbles but quickly regains his balance, pushing me behind him protectively.
"Jiung, stay behind me," Taehyun says, his voice steadier than before.
"But you're still weak," I protest, glancing nervously at the advancing zombie.
"I won't let anything happen to you or our child," he insists, determination burning in his eyes.
