I roll over and stare at the ceiling, the weight of my exhaustion pulling me under.
It’s two in the morning and I’m still wide awake.
I can’t turn off my brain.
I think about all the things I could have done differently, all the signs I ignored, the texts I didn’t respond to, the nights I spent alone because Chris was "working" late.
My phone buzzes on the pillow next to me and I turn it over.
It’s a text from Ben.
He works as a mechanic at a local garage and is usually up early, but I didn’t think he’d be texting me this time of night.
"Hey," he says.
"Just wanted to check in."
I smile despite myself and respond.
I’m awake.
Can’t sleep.
Thanks for checking in.
He responds immediately.
Do you want to talk?
I consider his offer for a moment, weighing my options.
I’ve been married to Chris for seven years, but it’s been three months since I found out about the affair.
I’ve been living apart from him since then, trying to decide if I should stay and try to work through this, or leave and start fresh.
I type my response to Ben and hit send before I can change my mind.
