I was born into slavery in 1743 on a plantation in Saint-Domingue, which is present-day Haiti.
My life changed forever when I led a slave revolt in 1791.
After the revolt, I became a general and was instrumental in organizing the resistance of slaves against the French colonizers.
I worked closely with Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who cofounded the Society of Friends of Freedom Against French Domination.
Together we were able to secure freedom for all slaves in Saint-Domingue.
In 1801, I proclaimed our independence from France and created a constitution that abolished slavery.
Alexandre Pétion, who served as president of Haiti from 1797 to 1801, worked closely with me to unite the various factions and secure our independence.
Even though I was overthrown and captured by French forces in 1802, my legacy lived on and paved the way for Haiti’s freedom.
The Haitian rebellion began in 1791 when I led a group of slaves in a raid on a plantation.
We killed several French colonizers and set fire to the buildings.
The slaves who participated in the raid were freed, and many more plantations were raided over the course of the next few months.
As the rebellion grew, so did my leadership role.
