I was born on the Dubois plantation in Saint-Domingue, the first child of my mother, a field slave.
My father was one of Master Pierre’s favored bucks in the breeder huts.
As a child, I was nothing special.
Just another mouth to feed in a world that didn’t care if I lived or died.
But when I turned ten, everything changed.
I began to see things: shadowy figures darting through the trees, ghostly lights flickering in the darkness, whispers carried on the wind.
At first, I thought it was just my imagination.
Until the day I saw my grandmother standing right in front of me.
She’d died years before I was born, but there she was, clear as day.
She reached out and touched my face, and I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body.
From that moment on, I was different.
I could sense when someone was in danger, and I could communicate with spirits.
I could heal wounds and predict storms.
