I was supposed to be a great athlete.
My dad was sure of it.
When I was little, he took me to watch the high school football team practice.
He sat me on my knees on the sidelines and explained the plays, telling me which position I would make a good fit for when I grew up.
As a toddler, I had already shown signs of being overweight, but my dad believed that once I started playing sports, I would slim down and become fast and agile.
The problem was that I didn’t want to play football.
And I wasn’t very good at it either.
In middle school, my gym teacher tried to interest me in basketball, but all I could think about was how humiliating it would be to trip over my own feet in front of my classmates.
I stuck with it for a while, but eventually dropped the sport and focused on my grades instead.
It turned out that being a bookworm was not as cool as being an athlete, at least not in our town.
When graduation rolled around, all of my friends were going off to different colleges and universities, and I was staying behind.
I had applied to one close-by school and one far-away school, just in case I wanted a change of scenery, but I wasn’t sure if I would be accepted.
