It took Pickle five years to leave me.
I spent two years trying to get back in touch with her.
I wrote her countless letters, but she didn't read any of them.
I knew this because I asked the postman if he delivered any mail to her house, and he told me that he did, but she never took it.
She just left it in the mailbox.
I knew it was a long shot, but I had nothing else to try.
Two years after that, I finally got a chance to see her again and apologize face-to-face.
But she didn't want to hear it.
She didn't even want to touch me.
I couldn't blame her.
I was heartbroken, but I knew I had no right to be.
I had hurt her so badly and I didn't deserve to act as if I was the one who was wronged.
So I swallowed my pride and let her go.
It was not until another two years later that I finally mustered up the courage to go back to where we started and try once again to apologize to her.
This time, face-to-face, without any letters or middlemen.
I stood in front of her door for a full hour, mustering up the courage to ring the doorbell.
My hand hovers over the doorbell, my fingers trembling.
Through the window, I catch a glimpse of movement - Pickle walking past, oblivious to my presence.
She looks different now, her hair shorter than it was before.
She's wearing the blue sweater I used to borrow from her when we were together.
Seeing her makes my chest tighten.
I remember the words my mother once told me - that sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, you have to let them go.
Some wounds need time and space to heal.
My fingers drop from the doorbell.
I step back, watching as Pickle disappears into another room.
Just as I'm about to turn away, the door swings open, and there she is, staring at me with those familiar eyes.
"What are you doing here, after all this time?" she asks, her voice a mix of surprise and guarded curiosity.
"I needed to tell you something," I reply, my voice barely above a whisper, "I finally understand why you left."
