My life was unraveling at an alarming pace.
First, there was the small matter of my boyfriend/manager disappearing.
Then, I found out he’d cleaned out my bank account.
To top it all off, I had no way to pay my rent.
I’d never been a pro at pulling together broken pieces of my life, so staring down the barrel of impending homelessness had me swallowing hard.
My only choice was to turn to the one person I knew who had enough money to bail me out of this mess.
The problem?
She hated me.
I couldn’t blame her, but that didn’t stop the hope from swelling in my chest as I knocked on her door.
When she answered, I sucked in a breath.
Shawna Morrissey stood before me with an expression that could only be described as horrified disgust.
"What are you doing here?"
I asked, trying to keep the desperation out of my voice.
"I’m sorry to show up unannounced like this. I know we haven’t always seen eye to eye."
"Eye to eye? You sabotaged my career, Spooky. More than once."
"I know, and I’m so sorry."
I held up my hands in surrender.
Bad Boy Alphas
I was standing in the doorway of her penthouse apartment, my shoulders slumping under the weight of my current situation.
She crossed her arms over her chest, effectively blocking me from entering.
But I noticed the way her eyes scanned over me, taking in the disheveled state of my appearance.
The designer purse I was clutching had a broken strap, and my clothes were stained from a day of traveling with no money to my name.
"I don’t know what you’re expecting from me," she said, her voice cold and detached.
"I’m not here to ask for much."
I swallowed hard.
"Marcus stole all of my money. I have nowhere to go."
"Marcus?"
"Marcus Blackwood. My boyfriend. He was also my manager."
Bad Boy Alphas
I tried to keep my voice steady, but it cracked when I thought about the empty apartment that was waiting for me.
Shawna’s expression shifted from disgust to something else.
Pity?
Maybe.
She uncrossed her arms and stepped aside, silently inviting me into her home.

As I passed by her, the scent of her signature perfume hit me like a punch to the gut.
"Why would Marcus do that to you?" Shawna asked, her tone softening slightly.
"I guess he figured I was just a stepping stone," I replied, trying to mask the bitterness in my voice.
"Well, if you're here for help, you better be ready to explain everything," she said, leading me to the living room.
Sitting on Shawna’s pristine white couch, I clutched the glass of water she had handed me.
My hands were still trembling as I took a sip.
The city lights twinkled through her floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a dim glow over the room.
I forced myself to meet her steady gaze.
"It started when Marcus convinced me to sign over my accounts to him," I began, my voice barely above a whisper.
"He said it was for better management, that he could handle everything more efficiently."
Shawna nodded, her expression unreadable.
"And then?"
I took another sip of water before continuing.
"At first, everything seemed fine. My money was still there. But then, slowly, it started disappearing. I didn’t notice at first because Marcus was always telling me not to worry about it, that he had everything under control."

Shawna’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"But you did notice eventually," she stated more than asked.
"Yes," I replied, my voice cracking.
"One day, I checked my accounts and there was almost nothing left. I confronted Marcus, but he just brushed it off, saying he had invested it all in some new business venture."
Shawna leaned forward slightly, her interest piqued.
"And then what happened?"
I closed my eyes for a moment, trying to gather the strength to continue.
"I went back to my apartment and found that everything was gone. All of my belongings, all of my clothes. Even the furniture was gone." Shawna’s eyes widened in disbelief.
"Everything?"
I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat.
"Yes. And to make matters worse, all of my credit cards were maxed out. I had no money left to even pay for a hotel room."
Shawna leaned back in her chair, her expression hardening again.
"So Marcus not only stole your money but also sold all of your belongings," she stated flatly.
I nodded again, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes.
"And then there was the final blow," I added, my voice barely above a whisper.

"I found out that Marcus had been secretly booking gigs under his new client’s name. A younger singer he’d been grooming to replace me."
Shawna’s eyes widened in shock.
"He replaced you with someone else?"
I nodded once more, taking another sip of water to calm myself down.
After hearing my story, Shawna stood up and began pacing her living room, the sound of her heels clicking against the marble floor echoing through the room.
She stopped abruptly and pulled out her phone, scrolling through her contacts with a determined look on her face.
"Marcus is playing at The Blue Room tonight with his new girl," she said, showing me the venue's Instagram post.
My stomach churned as I saw Marcus's familiar face in the promotional photo, his arm wrapped around a petite blonde girl I didn't recognize.
Shawna's red lips curved into a calculating smile as she outlined her idea.

"We'll go to the show. We'll gather evidence that Marcus is committing fraud by using your name to book gigs. And then, we'll confront him publicly."
I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I was ready to face Marcus again.
But Shawna's determination was contagious.
She grabbed her designer bag and dangled her car keys in front of me.
We arrived at The Blue Room just as Marcus's new singer was finishing her set.
It was my song, performed in a higher key.
Shawna led me through the crowded venue, her hand gripping mine as we weaved past tables and chairs.
The lights were dimmed, and the air was thick with anticipation.
Marcus stepped onto the stage to introduce the next act, and Shawna shoved me toward the steps.
Bad Boy Alphas
My legs were shaking as I climbed up, but seeing his shocked face gave me the courage to keep going.
I grabbed the microphone before he could stop me.
The band recognized me and began playing my signature song.
Marcus tried to interrupt, but Shawna blocked his path.
I grip the microphone stand tightly as the familiar opening notes fill the room.
The crowd falls silent, their eyes fixed on me instead of Marcus's blonde replacement who stands frozen at the edge of the stage.
My heart pounds against my ribs, but I force myself to breathe deeply, just like I practiced countless times before.
The band follows my lead perfectly - they know this song, my song.
Marcus shouts something from the side, but Shawna blocks his path while shooting me an encouraging nod.
