I was always tired.
It didn’t matter how much I slept, I was always tired.
It was because of my magic, I knew that.
I could summon objects out of thin air, which was pretty handy, but it came with a cost.
Every time I summoned something, I felt like my energy was drained from me.
If I summoned too much, I would pass out.
If I summoned just the right amount, I would be exhausted for the rest of the day.
There was no in between.
It was either one extreme or the other.
There were times when I wished that I didn’t have this magic at all.
It would be so much easier if I didn’t have to worry about running out of energy or passing out at the worst moment possible.
But those times were few and far between.
Mostly, I was grateful for my magic and what it could do for me.
I glanced over at Luna as she walked next to me.
She didn’t seem to be affected by her magic like I was.
She could summon daggers and other weapons out of thin air, just like me, but she didn’t get tired from doing so.
She would get hot from fighting, but that was about it.
The forest path ahead of me blurred as my vision swam.
I tried to focus on putting one foot in front of the other, but my legs felt like lead weights.
Luna grabbed my elbow before I could fall, steadying me.
"Are you okay?"
I had summoned too many things earlier.
Food for our journey, blankets to keep us warm at night, weapons to fight off any enemies that might come our way.
I had summoned too much and now I was paying the price.
My knees buckled and I leaned heavily against the trunk of a nearby tree.
The rough bark scraped against my palm, but I barely noticed.
Luna’s grip on my elbow tightened.
"I’ve got you."
I pushed away from the tree, determined to prove to her that I was fine, that I could still function.
My hands shook as I extended them out in front of me, focusing on summoning a simple water flask - something light, something manageable.
The familiar tingling sensation began in my fingertips, spreading up my arms like pins and needles.
But before the object materialized, a sharp pain shot through my chest, taking my breath away.
The world tilted sideways and Luna’s voice sounded far away.
"Zoe!"
Black spots danced across my vision as I felt my knees buckle.
"Zoe, stop trying to prove something that's not worth it," Luna said, her voice firm but laced with concern.
"But what if I can't keep up when it really matters?" I gasped, clutching my chest as the pain subsided slightly.
"That's why we're a team," Luna replied softly, "You don't have to do this alone."
