Kaito Haruichi
He is a high school student who transferred to Shinsei First High School. He is awkward, humorous, and introspective. Kaito harbors a secret admiration for his childhood friend Akane Shinonome and struggles with his feelings for her. He also has a complicated relationship with his adopted brother, Tooru, and is trying to fit into his new school environment.
Akane Shinonome
She is a high school student and childhood friend of Kaito Haruichi. She is intelligent, kind, and reserved. Akane holds a special place in Kaito's heart, and he finds himself drawn to her even at her expense of being seen as "nerdy." Despite her intelligence, she often goes unnoticed by others, which makes her more relatable and cherished by Kaito.
Makoto Matsumoto
She is another classmate of Kaito's at Shinsei First High School. She is serious, competitive, and observant. Makoto often notices things that others miss and provides insight into the school's dynamics. Her stern demeanor contrasts with her occasional displays of humor, showcasing her multifaceted personality and deepening her connection with Kaito through their shared experiences.
I, Kaito Haruichi, am a guy who loves girls.
I mean, who doesn’t?
Not that I’m saying I’m a pervert or anything.
But if I had to choose between staying with a group of guys and with a group of girls, I would definitely choose the latter.
I just can’t deny that I have a certain fondness for girls.
Especially those whom I find cute and endearing.
Speaking of which, there are currently four girls in my life whom I find adorable and sweet.
First, there’s my childhood friend Akane Shinonome.
Then, there are my classmates Natsuki Ichinose and Makoto Matsumoto.
And lastly, there’s a girl whom I haven’t mentioned yet but is also currently attending the same school as me.
All four of them are girls whom I admire and adore deeply.
And not that I’m saying this out of politeness or anything, but they are truly amazing in their own ways.
If you were to ask me why exactly I find them adorable, then I would have to say that it’s because they are all intelligent, kind, and somewhat shy.
Well, not all of them are shy, but they do have a certain bashfulness that makes them even more endearing to me.
During lunch break, I slowly walked towards Natsuki’s desk.
I was holding my math notebook in my hands and was nervously fidgeting with it.
Natsuki had just recently received the results of her latest test, and they were pinned on the bulletin board near her desk.
She only got a 40% on it.
It was barely enough for her to pass.
I cleared my throat to get her attention.
"Natsuki," I called out to her, "do you have a moment?"
She looked at me with a hint of surprise and confusion in her eyes.
"Yes, what is it?"
"It’s just that…"
I paused for a moment to collect my thoughts before continuing.
"Midterms are coming up soon, and I thought that maybe we could study together at the library after school. If you don’t mind, that is."
I could tell that she was taken aback by my sudden offer, but she quickly regained her composure and smiled at me.
"That sounds like a great idea," she said, twirling her mechanical pencil between her fingers.
"But how about we study at my place instead? It’s closer than the library."
"Sure," I replied, nodding my head in agreement.
"But don’t you think that we should focus on studying rather than hanging out?"
Natsuki laughed lightly and shook her head.
"Oh, Kaito. You’re so adorable when you’re being serious."
She then stood up from her seat and walked over to the bulletin board. She unpinned the test result from the board and stuffed it into her bag.
But before she did so, she crumpled it with unnecessary force as if she was trying to make it look like an accident.
I watched as she did this, feeling a bit confused by her actions.
"Natsuki," I asked hesitantly, "are you okay?"
She turned around to face me with a smile on her face.
"Yes, of course," she replied.
"Why wouldn’t I be?"
"Well, it’s just that…"
I trailed off, unsure of how to continue.
"You seemed a bit upset when you saw your test score."
Natsuki’s smile faltered for a moment before she regained her composure once again.
"Oh, that," she said dismissively.
"I’m fine. It’s just that I didn’t expect to do so poorly on the test."
She then turned back around and began walking towards the door. I followed closely behind her, feeling a bit concerned about her behavior.
Following her out of the classroom, I caught up to her and grabbed a seat next to her on a wooden bench in the courtyard.
She was still clutching her bag tightly, her knuckles white against the fabric.
I pulled out my own math test from my pocket and placed it on the bench between us.
"Look, I messed up these derivative problems too," I said, pointing to question four.
Natsuki hesitated for a moment before slowly retrieving her crumpled test from her bag.
She smoothed out the wrinkled paper on her lap and began comparing our answers side by side.
