My name is Jessica Afton and I have 21 siblings.
Yes, you read that right - 21.
Having that many siblings can be a real pain in the butt, especially when they all are from different mothers but the same father.
My father has been married five times and each of his wives has kids with him except for my mom who has two kids with him, including me.
My dad is now married to his fifth wife, and she has three kids of her own, making a total of eight kids in the house.
It's chaotic, to say the least.
I'm not even sure how he ended up marrying so many women in the first place.
I guess some people just get lucky.
I wake up to the sound of my siblings running around the house, yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs.
It always seems like utter chaos when I first wake up, but then I remember all of the faces and voices of my siblings as they run past my door, jumping on my bed and pulling my hair.
I sit up in bed and rub the sleep out of my eyes.
I'm not really a morning person, so I like to take my time getting ready for the day.
I get dressed and head downstairs to eat breakfast.
The kitchen is always the busiest room in the house in the morning, but I'm lucky enough to find a spot at the table.
I pour myself a bowl of cereal and sit down to eat it.
My oldest brother, Lance, walks into the room and everyone immediately quiets down.
He's always been a calming presence in the house, even when he was younger.
He's like a father figure to all of us, and he always makes sure we're all taken care of.
He walks over to me and gives me a kiss on the forehead before sitting down next to me.
"Good morning, Jess," he says with a smile.
"Good morning," I reply.
Lance is 22 years old and he's in college studying business.
He's always been smart and ambitious, and I have no doubt that he'll be successful one day. Lance gets up from his seat and pours himself a cup of coffee from the pot on the counter.
He takes a sip of it and then sits back down next to me.
"How are you doing today?" he asks me with a smile.
"I'm doing well," I reply.
"Good. What do you have planned for today?"
"Not much," I say with a shrug.
"Just going to hang out around the house."
Lance nods his head in understanding.
"Well, if you need anything, just let me know."
"Thanks," I say with a smile.
Lance smiles back at me and then turns his attention to our other siblings who are sitting around the table eating their breakfasts.
He greets each of them with a smile and asks them how they're doing today.
Lance is always so caring and attentive towards everyone else, but he never seems to think about himself very much.
I'm not sure how he does it, but he's always been able to make everyone happy without sacrificing his own happiness. Lance finishes his coffee and then gets up from his seat again.
"I'm going to go get ready for class," he says as he starts walking out of the room.
"See you guys later."
"Bye," we all say as he walks out of the kitchen.
As soon as Lance leaves, my siblings start talking again about their day ahead.
I finish my breakfast and get up from the table.
I start cleaning up the kitchen, putting away the dishes and wiping down the counters.
My sister Victoria walks into the room with her hair all tangled up in knots.
She's trying to brush it out, but it's not working very well.
I walk over to her and take the brush from her hand.
I gently start brushing out her hair, working out all of the knots and tangles.
When I'm finished, I tie it back in a ponytail for her.
"Thanks," she says with a smile.
Sebastian walks into the room looking around frantically.
"Has anyone seen my backpack?" he asks.
I look around the room and see it sitting under the couch.
I point to where it is and he goes to grab it.
"Thanks," he says as he puts it on his shoulder and starts walking out of the room again.
Jasmine walks into the kitchen holding a laundry basket in her arms.
She sets it down on the counter, but then it falls over, spilling all of its contents onto the floor.
I walk over to help her pick everything up. "Thanks," she says as I pass her a shirt that had fallen out of the basket.
I continue helping Jasmine until we have everything picked up again.
When we're finished, I look over at my brother Izuku who is sitting at the dining table doing his homework.
He looks thirsty, so I go get him a glass of water from the fridge.
I sit down next to him at the table and watch as he scribbles down some notes on a piece of paper.
"Need help?" he asks me.
I nod my head and he pushes his glasses up higher on his nose.
He hands me his pencil and I point to one of the math problems on his paper.
"Try this approach," I say as I start rewriting the equation.
Izuku frowns and erases what he had written before, replacing it with what I had shown him.
We go through each problem slowly, discussing his method of solving them.
When we finally get an answer right, he smiles widely at me.
I pat him on the shoulder and get up from my seat again.
As I walk away, I realize that amidst the chaos, this is the family I've chosen to love.
I walk into the living room and see Terrell and Marinette arguing over the TV remote.
Terrell has a tight grip on it, but Marinette is trying to pull it away from him.
Terrell raises his voice at her, but she doesn't back down.
She continues to try and pull the remote from his grasp, but he's too strong.
I walk over to them and step in between them.
I gently take the remote from Terrell's hand and look at both of them.
"Why don't you guys take turns?" I suggest.
They both nod their heads in agreement and I hand the remote to Marinette first.
She selects a show and then hands the remote back to me.
I hand it to Terrell and he sits down on the couch with a huff.
He crosses his arms over his chest and glares at me, but I just smile back at him.
I sit down next to him on the couch and place my hand on his shoulder.
After a few minutes, he starts to relax again. Michelle is sitting in the corner of the room, sketching in her notebook.
She didn't even look up when Terrell and Marinette were arguing over the TV remote.
I sit down next to her and she looks up at me.
I smile at her and she smiles back.
She goes back to her sketching, but I can see the tension in her shoulders start to ease.
The living room door opens and Lance walks in.
He looks around the room, taking in the scene before him.
He comes over to Michelle and me first, wrapping his arms around both of us in a hug.
We stand up and he moves on to Terrell, hugging him tightly.
Then he goes to Marinette, hugging her just as tightly.
One by one, he goes to each of our siblings—Michelle, Sebastian, Jasmine, Victoria, Izuku, and the others—hugging them all.
"What's going on, Lance?" I ask as he finally releases me from his embrace.
He steps back, a serious look on his face. "I just got some news—Mom's coming home tomorrow."
Everyone in the room freezes, the weight of his words settling over us like a heavy blanket.
I walk over to Lance, who has sat down on the couch.
I sit next to him and take his hand in mine.
"Where has she been?"
I ask, my voice shaking.
Lance turns to me, his eyes softening.
"She's been away for work," he says gently.
"She'll be back tomorrow evening."
I nod, processing his words.
There's a knot in my stomach, but I push it aside.
Lance notices my nervousness and places a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"We'll all be there to welcome her home," he says.
I take a deep breath and nod again.
I sit beside Lance, my hand still in his.
The room buzzes around us, but I focus on the feel of his hand in mine.
The warmth of his touch, the comfort of his presence.
I glance over at him, and he meets my gaze.
There's a slight frown on his face, but it disappears as soon as our eyes meet.
He gives my hand a squeeze and then releases it.
He stands up and walks to the window, staring outside.
I follow him, standing beside him silently.
After a moment, he turns to me.
"We need to talk about Mom's return," he says seriously.
I nod, sensing the gravity in his voice.
"What aren't you telling me, Lance?" I ask, my heart pounding.
He hesitates, then sighs deeply. "She's not just coming back for a visit—she's moving back in."
I sit down on the couch, my mind reeling.
Lance sits down beside me, his hand still holding mine.
"How do you feel about this?"
I ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
He takes a deep breath before answering.
"I'm worried," he admits.
"But I also know that we'll make it work. We always do."
I nod, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety.
Lance squeezes my hand again, his eyes filled with understanding.
"We'll get through this together," he says softly.
I nod again, feeling a sense of determination wash over me.
We'll face whatever challenges come our way, together as a family.
Lance stands up and pulls me to my feet.
"Let's get ready for tomorrow," he says, his voice filled with determination.
I nod, feeling a renewed sense of purpose.
As we start to leave the room, Terrell calls out, "Hey, what about the surprise party?"
Lance turns back, a small smile playing on his lips. "We'll still do it, but let's keep it low-key."
Terrell nods, his eyes shining with excitement.
Lance and I continue on our way, leaving the room and the noise behind us.
We walk in silence for a moment, my heart pounding in my chest.
I clear my throat before speaking.
"I think we should plan a family meeting," I say, looking up at Lance.
He nods, his eyes serious.
"Agreed," he says.
"We need to discuss Mom's return and set some ground rules."
I nod again, feeling a sense of relief wash over me.
"Let's do it tonight," I say, my voice filled with determination.
Lance nods, his hand still holding mine.
"Let's do it," he repeats.
I sit at the kitchen table, surrounded by my siblings.
The room is filled with the sound of murmurs and clinking dishes as we eat our meal together.
I take a deep breath before speaking, my voice carrying above the noise.
"Okay, everyone. Let's get down to business."
I say, my voice firm but gentle.
My siblings turn to me, their faces curious and attentive.
Terrell leans forward in his chair, his eyes fixed on me.
Marinette scribbles something in her notebook, her brow furrowed in concentration.
Izuku looks up from his book, his gaze meeting mine for a brief moment before he returns to reading. Fiona giggles softly, her eyes shining with mischief.
Jasmine hushes her sister, her own eyes fixed intently on me.
Sebastian leans against the wall, his arms crossed and his expression serious.
Michelle sits at the table, her pencil moving quickly across her sketchbook as she captures the scene before us.
Victoria twirls a lock of hair around her finger, her gaze drifting lazily around the room but never truly focusing on anything.
I take a deep breath before continuing.
"As you all know, Mom is coming home tomorrow evening," I say, my voice steady and confident.
My siblings nod in agreement, their faces serious and attentive once again.
Terrell clears his throat before speaking up.
"What's the plan?" he asks, his voice filled with curiosity. I smile softly before answering.
"Well," I begin, "first things first. We need to make sure that we're all here when she arrives."
My siblings nod in agreement once again.
Sebastian pushes off from the wall and walks over to stand beside me at the head of the table.
His presence is comforting and reassuring as he places a hand gently on my shoulder.
He looks around the room, then says, "And we should probably talk about why she's really moving back."
Marinette stops scribbling and looks up, her eyes wide. "Wait, what do you mean 'why'? Is there something else going on?"
Sebastian nods, glancing at me for confirmation. "Yeah, there's more to it than just work."
I nod, taking a deep breath.
"Okay, let's get started then," I say, my voice steady and confident.
Lance stands beside me, his gaze sweeping over our siblings.
I take a deep breath before speaking.
"First things first. We need to set some ground rules for when Mom gets back."
Terrell nods, his eyes serious.
"I agree. How about a curfew?"
I nod, pulling out a piece of paper and a pen.
"That's a good idea. What time should we set it at?"
Terrell shrugs.
"How about 10pm?"
I nod, writing it down.
"Okay, that's one. What else?"
Jasmine speaks up next.
"How about a chore chart? That way everyone knows what they're responsible for."
I nod again, adding it to the list.
Sebastian clears his throat once more, his voice serious and insistent.
"We should also discuss privacy rules," he says.
I nod, adding it to the list.
Terrell leans forward in his chair, his eyes fixed on me.
"How about this," he says, "everyone knocks before entering any room."
I nod again, jotting it down.
Jasmine speaks up once more.
"And personal belongings should be respected."
I nod again, adding it to the list.
We continue discussing and adding to the list until we have a solid set of ground rules for when Mom gets back.
I stand up from my seat at the head of the table, my siblings watching as I hold up the piece of paper with our new rules written on it.
"Let's make sure we're ready for her return."
I sit back down at the head of the table, the list of ground rules in front of me.
Lance glances at me before speaking up.
"Hey, how about we take a break and play some Mario Kart?"
Terrell nods, his eyes lighting up with excitement.
Sebastian smiles, his gaze drifting to the TV.
Jasmine and Michelle exchange a look before nodding in agreement.
Victoria shrugs, her gaze still focused on her phone.
Marinette smiles, her eyes shining with excitement.
I glance around the room, seeing nods and smiles from all of my siblings.
Terrell grabs the game console and sets it up on the TV, while Marinette picks out her favorite character.
The rest of us gather around the TV, our faces serious and focused as we wait for the game to start.
As we begin playing, I can feel the tension from earlier dissipating, replaced by a sense of unity and anticipation for Mom's return. Lance hands me a controller, his eyes hopeful as he waits for my response.
I take it from him, joining him on the couch as we settle in for a night of gaming and bonding as siblings.
The game begins, and I can feel my heart pounding in my chest as I focus on winning.
The room is filled with laughter and cheers as we play together, our spirits high and our bond stronger than ever.
As we continue playing, I can't help but feel grateful for this moment with my siblings.
It's a reminder that even in difficult times, we can always find joy and comfort in each other.
The game continues, and I can feel the excitement building in the room.
Suddenly, I have an idea.
"Hey, let's order some pizza to keep the fun going while we wait for Mom," I suggest.
Terrell nods, grabbing his phone and dialing our favorite pizza place.
Jasmine and Michelle help clear the table, making room for our meal.
Sebastian and Victoria start arguing over toppings, while Marinette and Izuku discuss their favorite combinations.
Lance watches us all with a smile on his face.
I join in on the discussion, suggesting we get a mix of everyone's favorites.
Terrell places the order, and we all sit back down to wait for our food to arrive.
"Hey, let's play a new game while we wait," I suggest.
Terrell nods, his eyes lighting up with excitement.
"Family Feud," he says, grabbing the game from the shelf.
We all gather around the TV, our faces serious and focused as we wait for the game to start.
Terrell sets it up on the TV, while Jasmine and Michelle clear the last of the pizza boxes from the table.
We divide into teams, Lance and I leading one side and Sebastian and Victoria leading the other.
Izuku and Marinette team up together, their eyes locked on each other as they strategize.
Victoria and Sebastian start bickering over who gets to answer first, but I calm them down by suggesting we go in a rotation.
As the game begins, Marinette suddenly pauses, looking thoughtful.
"Do you think Mom will be okay with all these changes?" she asks softly.
Terrell glances at her, his expression serious. "I think she'll appreciate that we worked together to make things better."
I nod, sitting down beside Marinette and squeezing her hand.
"Mom will love seeing us all together and happy like this," I reassure her, smiling softly.
Marinette nods, but I can still see the doubt in her eyes.
I turn back to the game, calling out an answer for our team.
Terrell laughs as he writes it down, his smile lighting up the room.
The game continues, and we all cheer as Izuku gets a question right.
Victoria and Sebastian's bickering turns light-hearted now, their smiles returning as they play.
As we continue playing, I glance around the room, noticing Jasmine smiling at Michelle's sketches on her phone.
Izuku whispers strategies to Marinette, their heads bent close together.
The doorbell rings, signaling the arrival of our pizza.
Terrell jumps up, heading towards the door.
"Perfect timing," he says, grinning as he opens it.
As he returns with the pizza boxes, Marinette looks at me and whispers, "Do you think we should tell Mom about our plan to redecorate the living room?"
