I remember the first time I saw myself in a mirror.
I was ten years old.
Up until that point, I had been living in a lab.
A stark white cube with silver tables and walls lined with wire mesh cages.
The only living things in the lab were the animals my creators brought for me to hunt.
Rats, rabbits, and the occasional deer fawn.
When I was small enough to fit in one of the cages, they brought me mice.
My diet consisted of protein rich sludge dispensed into the buckets hanging from the ceiling.
I was always alone.
Always by myself.
Until the day they brought me to a room filled with mirrors.
I saw her for the first time in my life, and I didn’t know her name yet.
The creature staring back at me in the reflection was a mess of brown and orange fur with black stripes like a tiger, but her eyes were the piercing green of a snake.
Her arms and legs were long and lean like a hyena, but her hands had razor sharp claws like a wolverine.
Her hair was long and wild like a horse’s mane, but it was soft to the touch when I reached up to grab it.
And her face…her face was all cat.
Ears, whiskers, nose and mouth.
When she smiled at me in the reflection, her sharp canine teeth glinted in the light.
