I sprint down the alley, dodging trash cans and leaping over a homeless guy curled up in a ball.
I can hear the police sirens getting closer and closer.
I’m running out of time.
I spot a blonde in a black leather jacket ahead of me.
She’s about my height and my build.
Without hesitation, I lunge at her.
She shrieks as I tackle her to the ground.
"What the hell?"
She tries to fight me off, but I pin her down, gripping her face between my hands.
My eyes lock on hers, and I feel the familiar jolt of power surge through me.
I’m inside her mind in an instant, pushing aside her thoughts and taking control.
It’s almost too easy.
One push, two pushes, three pushes, and—
I shove my way into her body, feeling the familiar sensation of muscles ripple beneath my new skin as I take control.
My thoughts replace hers.
I’m in control now.
The police are going to pin every one of my crimes on this poor unsuspecting woman.
By the time they figure it out, I’ll be long gone.
I stand up, brushing myself off and smoothing down her jacket before marching toward the police.
I take slow, steady steps, making sure to keep my pace even and controlled.
I can feel the blonde hair swaying against my back as I walk.
The black leather jacket is a nice touch, I think.
It adds an edge to my appearance.
I adjust it slightly on my shoulders, making sure it sits just right.
I can see the officers waiting for me at the end of the alley.
They’re looking right at me, their eyes narrowed.
I keep my expression blank and calm, even though I’m feeling anything but.
I raise my hands slowly in front of me, showing them that I’m unarmed.
"Officers," I say in a clear voice, "I believe you’re looking for someone?"
They hesitate, exchanging glances with one another.
I focus on the lead officer, waiting for him to make the first move.
He steps forward, his eyes locked on mine.
"Ma'am, we need to ask you a few questions," he says, his voice firm but not unkind.
"Of course," I reply smoothly, "but I think you'll find I'm not who you think I am."
His brow furrows, suspicion creeping into his eyes.
"Ma'am, we have reason to believe you’re involved in a string of high-profile thefts," he says, his voice firm.
"I assure you, I’m not," I reply, keeping my tone cool and level.
He eyes me warily, clearly not convinced.
I can see the wheels turning in his mind as he tries to figure out what game I’m playing.
But I know how to work this.
I know exactly how to play him.
I take a deep breath, focusing my energy and reaching out with my powers.
The officer’s eyes flicker, his expression softening ever so slightly.
I can feel his mind wavering, his thoughts clouding over.
I push harder, sinking deeper into his psyche and taking control.
His pupils dilate, his mouth falling open slightly as he stares at me in a daze.
"Who are you?" he asks, his voice thick and slow.
"My love," I reply, leaning in close to him.
His eyes widen slightly at that, but he doesn’t pull away.
Instead, he reaches up and strokes my cheek gently.
"I don’t remember," he says, confusion etched across his face. "You don’t need to," I tell him softly.
"We’ve been together for years. You love me."
He nods slowly, a smile spreading across his face.
"I love you," he repeats, his voice filled with conviction.
The other officers exchange glances behind him, but they don’t say anything.
They seem unsure of what to do with this situation.
I smile sweetly at the officer in front of me and take his hand in mine.
"Let’s go somewhere quiet," I suggest softly.
He nods without hesitation, following me without question as I lead him away from the other officers and down the street.
We walk hand in hand until we reach a quiet corner of the block.
The officer hasn’t said a word since we left the others behind, content to simply follow my lead and hold my hand. Once we’re alone again, I lean in close to him and whisper sweet nothings into his ear.
His eyes flutter closed as he leans into my touch, completely under my control now.
I can feel the familiar sensation of power coursing through me as I manipulate him further and further into my trap.
It’s almost too easy, but I’m not about to complain. With one final push, I sink all the way into his mind and take complete control of him once more.
I guide him to a secluded corner, his hand still in mine.
"Take the money from my bag and hide it in your jacket," I command.
He doesn’t hesitate, reaching into my bag and pulling out the stolen cash.
He shoves it into his jacket without question or comment.
"Now, when they ask you who did this, you’re going to tell them it was you," I continue.
He nods slowly, his eyes still vacant.
"I did it," he repeats back to me, his voice flat and emotionless.
I smile sweetly at him before releasing him from my control.
I watch as he walks back toward the other officers, the stolen money still hidden in his jacket.
I turn and walk away, disappearing into the crowd before they can even think to look for me.
I keep my eyes scanning the street as I walk, searching for my next target.
It doesn’t take long to find one.
I spot Billie Eilish walking alone down the street, her distinctive style making her stand out in a crowd.
I make my way toward her, keeping my pace casual and relaxed.
She doesn’t seem to notice me coming until I’m right beside her.
"Excuse me," I say, reaching out to tap her on the shoulder.
She turns toward me, a smile spreading across her face.
"Hi," she says politely, clearly unaware of who I am or what I’m after.
I smile back at her, reaching out to shake her hand.
"Let's make this unforgettable."
She extends her hand toward me, and I take it in mine.
I can feel the familiar rush of power as our hands touch, my mind reaching out to hers.
I focus my energy, sinking deeper into her psyche and taking control.
Her eyes widen slightly as she realizes what’s happening, but then they glaze over and fall empty once more.
I steady her body, adjusting to her unique frame and style.
I glance around, making sure no one saw the transition.
No one seems to have noticed anything out of the ordinary.
With Billie’s body now under my control, I walk away from the scene, already planning my next move.
I walk into the lingerie store, still in Billie’s body.
The racks of bras and underwear stretch out before me, a rainbow of colors and styles.
I scan the selection, looking for something that will work for my next plan.
I pull a few items from the rack, holding them up to examine them.
The fabric feels soft between my fingers as I run them over the delicate lace and satin.
I check the sizes, making sure they will fit my next target.
Once I’m satisfied, I make my way to the counter to pay.
The cashier looks up at me as I approach, her eyes narrowing slightly as she takes in Billie’s appearance.
I smile sweetly at her, trying to keep up the illusion that this is really Billie.
She smiles back at me, ringing up my purchases and handing me the bag.
I take it from her, clutching it tightly in my hand as I turn to leave.
I step out onto the street once more, already thinking about how these purchases will help me with my next escape.
I look around, scanning the crowds for my next target.
"Why do you keep doing this?" a voice suddenly asks from behind me, startling me.
I turn to see a familiar face, someone I thought I'd left behind long ago.
"You know why," I reply, my voice steady but my heart racing, "because it's the only way to stay ahead of them."
