"Hey, Em, you should come with me tonight! It’ll be fun, I promise."
Lily was trying to convince me to go to a singles event at her church.
I hadn’t been to one of those since college.
Back then it was easy.
I was in a small group and the leader would announce when there was a singles event, so I’d just show up with all my friends.
But now that I was out of college and working full-time, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to jump back into that scene.
"I don’t know. I’m not sure I’m ready for that."
I hesitated as I stirred the coffee grounds in my cup.
I loved coffee, but the smell of the grounds always made my stomach turn.
Lily reached across the table and put her hand on my arm.
"You have to get back out there. It’s the only way you’re going to meet someone. Besides, this is different. It’s not like those events you went to in college. This is a Christian singles event. You know how important your faith is to you. Wouldn’t you want someone who shares that?"
She had a point.
My faith was very important to me.
I had been attending a Baptist church near my apartment for the last year and loved the message they always presented.

I stared into my coffee cup, watching the grounds swirl around as I thought about her words.
The coffee shop was busy for a Sunday morning, but I could tune out the ambient chatter of the other patrons.
My fingers traced the rim of the ceramic mug as I thought about all the singles events I had gone to in college.
There was always so much pressure to find someone.
It was like everyone was trying to size each other up and judge whether they were good enough.
I’d always felt uncomfortable at them.
But Lily was right.
It would be nice to meet someone who shared my faith.
I thought about how peaceful I felt every Sunday morning when I went to church.
The message always resonated with me, and I loved singing hymns with the congregation.

Taking a deep breath, I looked up at Lily’s hopeful face.
"Okay," I said quietly, "I’ll go."
Lily's eyes lit up with excitement.
"You won't regret it, Em! Plus, I heard there's someone new who just started coming—he's really into music like you are."
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite myself.

"I'll believe it when I see it," I said, taking a sip of my coffee.
"But I'm more concerned about finding something to wear."
Lily laughed.
"Come on, Em. You have a whole closet full of clothes."
I shook my head.
"You know that's not what I mean. I don't have anything that makes me feel confident. All my clothes are safe and boring. Dark colors, loose fits... they're all just hiding my curves instead of showing them off."
Lily leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with understanding.
"Tell me more about this closet full of clothes."
I sighed.
"It's just the usual stuff. Jeans, t-shirts, a few dresses. But they're all so... plain. And they make me look frumpy."

Lily nodded thoughtfully.
"I think I see the problem. You need something that makes you feel good about yourself."
"Exactly!"
I exclaimed.
"And I don't have anything like that."
Lily grinned mischievously.
"Well, we can fix that. Let's go to your apartment and try on some outfits."
I hesitated for a moment, unsure if I was ready to let Lily into my personal space.
But she was right - I did need to find something that made me feel confident.
And who better to help me than my best friend?
"Okay," I said finally, standing up from the table.
"Let's do this." As we walked back to my apartment, Lily asked me about the dresses in my closet.
I told her about the floral one that had been hanging there for months, but I hadn't had the courage to wear it yet.
Her eyes lit up when she heard about it.
"That sounds perfect! We can style it with a denim jacket and some boots to make it more casual."

I hadn't thought of that before, but now that she mentioned it, it sounded like a great idea.
For the first time since agreeing to go to the singles event, I felt a spark of excitement.
Back in my apartment, I stood in front of the full-length mirror while Lily rummaged through my closet.
The floral dress had been hanging there for months, still with the tags attached.
I slipped it over my head and smoothed the fabric down over my hips.
It fell just above my knees, and the V-neck framed my face nicely.
My hands automatically moved to tug at the hem and pull down the neckline, but Lily caught me.
"Don't do that," she said gently.
"You look beautiful."
She helped me into the denim jacket and handed me a pair of brown boots.
When I stepped into them, Lily circled around me, making small adjustments to the fit of the dress and jacket.
I looked in the mirror again, and this time I noticed something different.

I turn slowly in front of the mirror, taking in how the floral fabric moves with me.
The dress fits better than I remembered, skimming over my curves without clinging.
Lily stands behind me, beaming as she adjusts the denim jacket one final time.
My hands still want to tug at the hemline, but I force them to stay at my sides.
For the first time in years, I let myself really look at my body without immediately finding flaws.

The outfit feels both comfortable and pretty - like me, but better.
Lily clapped her hands together, a triumphant smile on her face.
"See? I told you this dress was a hidden gem," she said, her voice full of encouragement.
I met her eyes in the mirror, feeling a surge of gratitude.
I stand in my entryway, checking one last time that I have everything I need.
My hand brushes against the soft fabric of the floral dress as I reach for my purse on the hook.
Lily waits by the door, car keys jingling in her hand.
When I hesitate, she steps forward and straightens my denim jacket with a sisterly touch.
"You've got this," she says, and I nod, remembering how the mirror reflected someone stronger than I usually see.

The evening air feels crisp as I step onto my front porch, my boots clicking against the concrete.
"Do you think he'll be there?" I ask, trying to sound casual.
Lily grins, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"Only one way to find out, and besides, you're not going for him—you're going for you."
I fidget with my purse strap while Lily locks the front door behind us.
The breeze carries the scent of blooming jasmine from my neighbor's garden, mingling with the familiar hint of Lily's perfume.
My bare legs feel the chill of the evening air, making me wonder if I should have worn tights under the dress.
But before I can voice my doubts, Lily links her arm through mine and guides me down the porch steps.
Her heels click against the pavement, a steady beat next to my boots.
We walk towards her car, parked under the soft glow of the streetlight.
When we reach it, I pause with my hand on the door handle.
Lily squeezes my shoulder gently and whispers, "Just be yourself."
I take a deep breath, nodding as I open the car door.
"Do you really think I'm ready for this?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.

Lily smiles reassuringly, "You've been ready for longer than you realize; tonight's just your chance to see it."
I pause mid-buckle, my heart skipping a beat.
"What did he say?"
I try to sound casual, but my voice betrays my curiosity.
Lily keeps her eyes on the ignition, but I catch her suppressing a smile.
She starts the car, taking her time to answer.

The engine hums in the background as she finally speaks.
"He said he saw you at church and wondered if you'd be there tonight."
My fingers trace the floral pattern on my dress while I process her words.
I grip my purse tighter as Lily navigates through the evening traffic.
Streetlights cast intermittent shadows across my dress, and the radio plays softly in the background—a Christian song I recognize from Sunday service.
When we stop at a red light, I catch a glimpse of myself in the visor mirror and instinctively reach for my lipstick to reapply it.
But before I can, Lily gently takes my hand away from my face.
"Leave it," she says softly.
"You look perfect."
I lean back in my seat, watching the familiar buildings pass by outside the window.
The church steeple comes into view, its cross illuminated against the darkening sky.
"Do you think he'll actually talk to me?" I ask, my nerves bubbling up again.
Lily chuckles softly, "If he doesn't, he's a fool, but trust me, he will."
How to find love in a sinful world
I nod, feeling a mix of excitement and dread as we pull into the church parking lot.
I grip my purse tightly as Lily and I walk from her parked car to the church entrance.
The evening air feels cool against my bare legs, and my boots click steadily on the concrete path.
Other singles filter into the building ahead of us, their chatter and laughter drifting back.
When we reach the bottom of the church steps, I freeze, my heart pounding.
Lily notices and links her arm through mine, whispering an encouraging word.
How to find love in a sinful world
I pause at the church entrance, my hand resting on the heavy wooden door.
The muffled sounds of conversation and worship music drift through from inside.
Lily stands beside me, patient but expectant.
My fingers trace the intricate carvings on the door's surface as I gather my courage.
I remember the confidence I felt earlier in my floral dress, my hair styled just right.
Through the frosted glass, I see shadowy figures moving about the fellowship hall.
The thought of Ben being among them makes my pulse quicken.
"Are you ready?" Lily asks, her voice a steady anchor in my swirling thoughts.
I take a deep breath, nodding slowly.
"Let's do this," I say, pushing the door open with newfound resolve.
How to find love in a sinful world
I push through the heavy wooden door and step into the warm, golden light of the fellowship hall.
The room is alive with the hum of conversation and the occasional burst of laughter.
The singles mingle around punch bowls and tables laden with an assortment of snacks.
Fall flowers adorn the tables, adding a touch of vibrant color to the space.
My eyes scan the room, taking in the familiar faces from Sunday services.
How to find love in a sinful world
I pretend not to be searching for Ben, but my heart skips a beat at the prospect of catching a glimpse of him.
Lily guides me toward the refreshment table, her hand steady on my elbow.
I focus on walking confidently in my boots, my fingers occasionally brushing against the hem of my floral dress.
I stand by the refreshment table, pretending to study the array of cookies and pastries.
Lily chatters beside me, but her words fade into the background as I scan the room.
Movement near the entrance catches my eye.
I turn, my heart quickening as I see Ben walk in, his presence commanding attention.
He's wearing a blue button-down shirt that complements his dark hair perfectly.
His eyes scan the room, and for a moment, our gazes lock.
I quickly look down at my cup of punch, my fingers tightening around it.
When I dare to glance up again, Ben is no longer at the door.
He's standing by Pastor Mike, shaking hands and exchanging a few words.
My gaze lingers on him, drinking in every detail.
How to find love in a sinful world
Lily nudges me gently, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Hey, he's here. Just be patient."
I nod, my eyes fixed on Ben as he finishes his conversation with Pastor Mike.
My fingers trace the rim of my punch cup absently, my heart pounding in my chest.
Lily's voice is a steady presence beside me, but I'm lost in the sight of Ben.
When Pastor Mike walks away, Ben turns again, his eyes meeting mine across the room.
This time, I don't look away.
A small smile tugs at the corners of his mouth, and my heart skips a beat.
I set my cup down carefully, my hands trembling slightly.
Lily whispers in my ear, "Go!"
I smooth out the front of my dress, take a deep breath, and start walking across the room toward him.
How to find love in a sinful world
As I approach, Ben's smile widens, and he takes a step forward to meet me halfway.
"Hey," he says softly, his voice warm and inviting.
"Hi," I reply, trying to keep my voice steady, "I wasn't sure you'd be here tonight."
He chuckles, his eyes crinkling at the corners.
"I wouldn't miss it."
His hand brushes against mine, and he gently guides me away from the refreshment area.
My boots click softly on the fellowship hall floor as we weave between small groups of chatting singles.
The noise of the gathering gradually fades into the background as we make our way toward a quieter corner of the room.
How to find love in a sinful world
We stop near one of the stained glass windows, where large potted plants create a semi-private space.
Ben's hand remains steady around mine, his thumb lightly brushing against my knuckles.
The contact sends tingles up my arm.
When we reach the corner, he lets go of my hand to pull out two chairs from a nearby table.
I settle into the chair he offers, smoothing my floral dress beneath me while he takes the seat beside me.
The stained glass window casts colored shadows across the table between us.
Ben leans in slightly, his blue shirt sleeve nearly touching my denim jacket.
"How's your week been?"
His voice is low and gentle, his eyes locked on mine.
"It's been good," I reply, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Busy with school and work."
He nods, his expression understanding.
"I know how that is."
A moment of silence falls between us, but it's not uncomfortable.
How to find love in a sinful world
Ben's gaze remains steady on mine, his smile soft and genuine.
"So," he says, breaking the silence, "what did you think of last Sunday's service?"
I return his smile, feeling my heart rate slow slightly as we fall into an easy conversation.
"It was great," I say, leaning forward a little.
"I really liked the worship songs they chose."
"Me too," he agrees.
"The one about hope in darkness is one of my favorites."
"Mine too," I reply, my voice filled with enthusiasm.
"There's something about the lyrics that always resonates with me."
As we talk, I become more aware of Ben's presence beside me.
How to find love in a sinful world
His knee brushes against mine under the table, sending a jolt of electricity through me.
In that moment, I realize this is where I want to be.
