Mark and Alex were my best friends ever since I can remember.
We grew up together, went to the same school and spent most of our time during summer vacations exploring the woods that surrounded our town.
One day, when we were twelve years old, Mark came up with the idea of camping in the woods for a whole week.
He’d found a small clearing not far from our usual spot and the three of us decided to check it out.
That was how our annual camping trip tradition began.
We’d do it every summer until we graduated from high school and went our separate ways to attend different colleges.
But now that we’re all back in town, we decided to take our annual trip again.
I was really excited.
It had been too long since we’d done it and I missed spending time with my two best friends.
“So, have you guys packed everything?”
I asked, as Mark drove Alex’s car to our destination.
“Of course, we have,” Alex replied, rolling his eyes.
“You should know me better than that, Emily!”
“Yeah,” Mark commented, looking at his two friends in the rearview mirror.
“Alex is a bit of a freak when it comes to planning.”
“Hey!” Alex exclaimed.
“Just because I like to be prepared doesn’t make me a freak!”
“No, I guess not,” Mark said.
“You’re just special.”
Alex stuck his tongue out at Mark before turning his attention back to me.
“So, what about you?”
“I packed everything I need,” I said.
“I’m good to go.”
Our conversation was interrupted by my phone ringing.
I pulled it out of my pocket and saw a message from my mom.
I thought for a moment about replying, but then decided against it and turned my phone off instead.
My mom could be a bit overprotective when it came to me, but I didn’t want her worrying about me while I was on my trip with my friends.
I knew she’d be okay if I was with Mark and Alex and not on my own, but she wouldn’t be able to help herself.
We spent the rest of the car ride talking about our school days and laughing at all the crazy things we’d done when we were kids.
It was nice to reminisce about old times, but I was glad we were making new memories too.
Mark parked the car in the same spot we always did, and we got out to carry our stuff to the clearing where we were going to set up our campsite.
Alex was in charge of the tent, while Mark and I took care of everything else.
It took us about an hour to get everything set up, but once it was done, Alex pulled out his phone to check the time.
“Cool,” he said, putting his phone away.
“We were faster than I thought we’d be.”
“Well, that’s because you kept telling us what to do,” Mark said, rolling his eyes.
“I know,” Alex replied, grinning widely at Mark’s comment.
“I’m just that good!”
