I finally finished the memorysharing device!
I had been working on it for months, and I was so excited to show it off and test it that I didn’t sleep last night.
I was a bit too excited, though—I woke up at 4:30 AM and couldn’t stop myself from finishing the last steps.
Now I was exhausted, but at least I got it done.
All I needed was someone to test it out with me…
Oh, if only my hot neighbor would be willing.
He was an athlete—a basketball player or something—and I could tell he was smart, too.
He had gotten to know me over the months I’d been living in the house, and he wasn’t as intimidating as he looked at first.
He was actually kind of goofy.
I convinced him to come over because he was curious.
He hadn’t seemed like he would have much interest in helping me test a device, but as soon as I mentioned the words "memory" and "sharing," he was on board.
"Hey, Jason," he said when I buzzed him into my apartment.
"You’re looking… um… vibrant today."
I flushed.
"I didn’t sleep last night. And my name is Jason Thompson."
"Yeah, and my name is Alexandra Thompson—"
"Alex! You’re here!"
My mom burst out of her bedroom to greet him.
She had been staying with me for a while now.
She grinned at him.
"We’re going shopping later. Want to come?"
"No, thanks…" he said slowly.
I rolled my eyes.
"Mom, I’m trying to work on a project. And he’s here to help me with it."
"Oh, okay. Well, I’ll leave you two alone then."
She winked at me.
"Have fun!"
I sighed and led him into the living room.
I had set up the device in the middle of the coffee table.
It was a small box with two headsets attached to it.
"Okay, so this is the memorysharing device," I explained.
"It’s still a prototype, but it should work. Just put on the headset and think about a memory you want to share."
He nodded and sat down on the couch.
I sat next to him and put on my own headset.
"Okay, so what do I do?"
"Just think about a memory you want to share," I said.
"And then… just kind of… push it out of your mind."
He nodded and closed his eyes.
I did the same.
I thought about a memory from when I was little—a time when my mom took me to the beach and we built sandcastles together.
I pictured it in my mind, and then I imagined pushing it out of my head and into the air.
Suddenly, I felt something strange happening in my brain.
It was like a tingling sensation, like pins and needles but in my thoughts instead of my body.
And then, suddenly, I was seeing things that weren’t mine—things that belonged to Alex. He was thinking about a memory of him playing basketball with his friends when they were kids.
I could see them running around on the court, laughing and shouting at each other.
It was like I was right there with them.
I could hear their voices and smell the sweat on their skin.
It was amazing!
I opened my eyes and looked over at Alex.
He was still sitting there with his eyes closed, but he looked different somehow.
His face was more relaxed than usual, and his shoulders were slouched forward instead of standing up straight like they usually did.
"Alex?"
I said softly.
He opened his eyes and looked at me curiously.
"What?""I think we did it," I said excitedly.
"We shared memories!"
He looked confused for a second, but then he grinned at me.
"That’s awesome! Let’s do it again!"
We spent the rest of the day sharing memories back and forth between us—some happy ones, some sad ones, some funny ones…
and then, just as the sun dipped below the horizon, we both realized we had become more than just neighbors.
