I believe in the Toothpaste Fairy.
Even though I lost my first tooth last night, I still believe.
My sister Mia doesn’t.
She says there’s no such thing as the Toothpaste Fairy, but that’s because she’s a grown-up (at least she thinks she is).
Last night, after I wrapped my tooth in a special cloth and tucked it into my empty tooth socket box, I wrote a letter to the Toothpaste Fairy.
Dear Toothpaste Fairy,
I hope this finds you well and rested from your long flight to all the houses where kids lost teeth!
I lost my first tooth!
It came out while I was eating a Fudgsicle!
I hope you can read through the Fudgsicle blood on the outside of my tooth because I didn’t want to wash it clean so you can see where it came from!
I would really love it if you could leave me some money or a fun present like a necklace or a special pencil or maybe even a Fudgsicle or two!
I brush my teeth every morning and every night with toothpaste!
That’s why I’m the Toothpaste Fairy.
I drew you a picture of what I look like in case you get confused with all the letters you get and aren’t sure which house to go to.
I’m going to bed now.
Please be sure to come while I’m sleeping!
Love,
The Toothpaste Fairy
Ava
I woke up to the morning sunshine streaming through my window.
It made a warm, bright pattern on my bed.
My heart was pounding with excitement as I reached under my pillow.
My fingers brushed against something smooth and cool.
I pulled it out, and oh my gosh!
The Toothpaste Fairy had come while I was sleeping!
In my hand was a shiny new necklace.
I held it up to the light and watched it twinkle and sparkle.
The chain was thin and delicate like magic.
Mia stuck her head into my room.
She saw the necklace in my hand, and her eyes went wide with surprise.
The Toothpaste Fairy
She tried to hide her smile, but she couldn’t do it.
The Toothpaste Fairy
I ran to her room, holding the necklace tightly in my hand.
"Look what the Toothpaste Fairy left me!" I exclaimed.
I held it up so she could see it.
Mia leaned forward and studied it with a skeptical eye.
Her fingers brushed over the chain, and she raised an eyebrow.
"It’s pretty," she said, trying not to believe in the magic of the Toothpaste Fairy.
But I could tell she was starting to waver.
"See? The Toothpaste Fairy is real!"
I said, my voice full of determination.
Mia sighed and nodded just a little bit.
The Toothpaste Fairy
Later that afternoon, I was sitting on the living room floor, staring at my necklace.
I loved it so much!
Mia came into the room and sat down beside me.
She looked at the necklace in my hand, and her eyes narrowed.
"What else did you get?" she asked.
I looked up at her, surprised.
I had been so excited about the necklace that I had forgotten all about the envelope on my nightstand.
I jumped up and ran to get it.
Mia followed me, her curiosity getting the better of her.
I tore open the envelope and pulled out a small, crumpled map.
It was made of thick paper, and there were colorful drawings all over it.
Mia leaned over my shoulder to see it better.
The Toothpaste Fairy
The map had a big X marked in one corner with a note that said "Start here!"
Then there were arrows leading to different places around the house with little pictures of things like a cat or a book or a flower.
Mia’s eyes went wide as she studied it.
"Is this... a treasure map?"
I nodded, grinning from ear to ear.
"Looks like the Toothpaste Fairy left us a little adventure!" I said excitedly.
Mia hesitated, then whispered, "Maybe there's more magic in this house than I thought."
The Toothpaste Fairy
I spread the map out on the living room floor.
It was a little crumpled, so I smoothed it out with my hands.
The drawings were so colorful and pretty.
I traced my finger over the lines, studying it carefully.
Mia knelt down beside me, her eyes wide with excitement.
"Where do we start?" she asked, pointing at the big X.
I grinned.
"Right here!"
We followed the path of the map through our house.
At each mark, we found a little surprise waiting for us.
In the kitchen, there was a tiny bottle of glitter hidden behind a jar of cookies.
In the hallway, there was a small key hanging from a picture frame.
The Toothpaste Fairy
And in the backyard, there was a flower hidden behind a bush.
Finally, we came to the last mark on the map.
It was an X marked in front of a big tree in our backyard.
Mia and I looked at each other and shrugged.
We didn’t see anything special about this spot.
But then Mia reached down and picked up a postcard that was lying on the ground. It was a picture of New York City’s skyline at night, all lit up and beautiful.
Mia held it up to her chest and stared at it like it was magic.
The Toothpaste Fairy
I flipped it over, and on the other side, there was a message.
"Your next adventure awaits in New York!"
Mia’s eyes went wide as she read it.
She looked up at me, her face full of wonder.
"New York!"
I said, my voice full of excitement.
We ran back inside to tell Mom about our adventure.
She was in the kitchen, sipping a cup of coffee.
She raised an eyebrow as we burst into the room.
"Look what the Toothpaste Fairy left us!" I exclaimed, holding out the postcard.
Mom took it from me and studied it with a smile on her face.
"New York, huh?" she mused aloud.
The Toothpaste Fairy
Mia leaned against the counter, her eyes still wide with wonder.
"Do you think there’s really something waiting for us there?" she asked.
Mom smiled knowingly.
"Only one way to find out," she replied.
The Toothpaste Fairy
I ran back to my room, my mind buzzing with the thought of New York.
Mia followed me, her eyes shining with a mix of disbelief and excitement.
We started pulling clothes and things out of our drawers and packing them into our suitcases.
Mia paused, holding up a pair of socks.
"Are we really going?"
She asked, her voice full of wonder.
I nodded eagerly, my heart racing with excitement.
"Yes! We’re going on an adventure!"
Mia grinned and tossed the socks into her bag.
The rest of the afternoon was a blur as we packed our bags and prepared for our trip.
Finally, everything was ready.
I zipped my suitcase shut and stood up straight, feeling like I was on top of the world.
The Toothpaste Fairy
I dragged my suitcase down the hallway, the wheels bumping over the carpet.
Mia followed behind me, her bag slung over her shoulder.
We found Mom in the living room, flipping through a travel magazine.
"We’re ready!" I announced, my voice echoing with excitement.
Mom looked up at us, her eyes twinkling.
She set the magazine aside and pulled out her laptop.
"Alright," she said, fingers tapping on the keyboard.
Mia and I leaned over her shoulders as she navigated through the airline’s website.
The anticipation built with each click until finally, Mom turned to us with a grin.
"Tickets booked!"
I squealed with excitement, throwing my arms around Mia.
The Toothpaste Fairy
We piled into the car, our suitcases nestled in the trunk.
As we drove towards the airport, I couldn’t help but bounce with excitement.
Mia sat beside me, her eyes glued to the window as we sped along.
Mom hummed softly to the radio, glancing at us in the rearview mirror with a knowing smile.
The cityscape gave way to the bustling airport terminal.
We stepped out of the car, feeling the cool breeze against our faces.
I clutched my boarding pass tightly, my heart racing as we made our way through security.
Finally, we reached our gate and I watched eagerly as the plane approached.
The Toothpaste Fairy
We settled into the waiting area, my suitcase by my side.
Suddenly, an announcement crackled over the speakers.
"Attention all passengers. We are about to hold a lottery for two first-class upgrades and a vacation package. Please have your boarding passes ready."
My heart thumped in my chest as I clutched my pass.
Mia nudged me, her eyes wide with excitement.
"Imagine if we win," she whispered.
Mom chuckled, her eyes shining with amusement.
"Let’s dream big!"
The announcer called our names, and disbelief washed over me.
We had won!
Cheers erupted around us as we approached the counter, our golden tickets in hand.
Mia turned to me, her voice trembling with excitement.
"Can you believe this? First-class and a vacation package!"
Mom laughed, shaking her head in amazement.
"Looks like our adventure just got a whole lot more interesting!"
The Toothpaste Fairy
We boarded the plane, settling into our plush first-class seats.
As we fastened our seatbelts, the flight attendant handed us a brochure.
"Congratulations on winning the vacation package. Please take a look at all the exclusive destinations and activities included."
Mia and I exchanged glances, our imaginations running wild.
Mom leaned over, pointing out the various options.
"Imagine all the adventures we could have."
Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she flipped through the pages.
Mia nodded eagerly, her initial skepticism about magic slowly fading.
The plane soared into the sky, and I clutched the brochure tightly.
An extended holiday awaited us, and with a determined grin, I turned to Mom.
The Toothpaste Fairy
"Let’s make this the best vacation ever!"
The plane jolted violently, and I gripped the armrests tightly.
Mom's eyes widened as she clutched Mia's hand.
The captain's voice crackled over the intercom.
"Please fasten your seatbelts. We are experiencing turbulence and will be making an emergency landing."
Passengers murmured anxiously, and the flight attendants moved swiftly to secure trays and check seatbelts.
I glanced at Mia, who tried to appear brave but couldn't hide her fear.
Mom squeezed our hands reassuringly.
"Everything will be alright."
The plane descended sharply, and my stomach dropped.
The wheels touched down with a jarring thud, and relief washed over us as the plane came to a halt.
The Toothpaste Fairy
As the plane taxied to a stop, I peered out the window, trying to catch a glimpse of where we had landed.
The airport was unfamiliar, bustling with activity.
Mia leaned over, her curiosity matching mine.
"Where are we?"
Her voice trembled slightly, and I nodded in agreement.
Mom unbuckled her seatbelt and stood up, glancing at us with a reassuring smile.
"Let's find out."
She led the way down the aisle, and we followed, eager for answers.
We stepped into the terminal, the air thick with chatter and announcements.
I clutched my suitcase handle tightly as we trailed behind Mom, following signs toward baggage claim.
The Toothpaste Fairy
The airport was a blur of unfamiliar sights and sounds, and I struggled to keep up with Mom and Mia.
We approached an airport staff member standing by a kiosk.
Mom smiled politely, her eyes shining with curiosity.
"Can you tell us where we are?" she asked.
The staff member glanced at her tablet before looking up with a friendly smile.
"Welcome to Chicago," she replied.
Mia's eyes widened in surprise, and I felt a thrill of excitement ripple through me.
Mom nodded thoughtfully, then turned to us with a determined look.
"We weren't supposed to land here, but maybe it's a sign," she said, her voice filled with intrigue.
Mia tilted her head, curiosity piqued. "A sign for what?"
Mom grinned, a hint of mischief in her eyes. "An unexpected adventure."
The Toothpaste Fairy
As we navigated the bustling terminal, Mom spotted a tourist information desk and led us over.
The attendant greeted us warmly, handing out brochures filled with pictures of Chicago's attractions.
I scanned the pages, my eyes catching on towering skyscrapers, shimmering lakes, and vibrant street art.
Mia leaned in, pointing at a picture of a famous sculpture shaped like a bean.
"Can we see that?" she asked eagerly.
Mom nodded, her smile encouraging our curiosity.
We huddled together, planning our impromptu adventure.
The Toothpaste Fairy
As we stepped out of the airport, the crisp Chicago air enveloped us.
Mom hailed a cab, and we piled in, buzzing with excitement.
The city unfolded before us, towering buildings and bustling streets capturing our attention.
Mia leaned forward, pointing out landmarks she recognized from the brochure.
Our cab stopped at Millennium Park, and we tumbled out, eyes set on the gleaming Bean sculpture ahead.
Its reflective surface distorted our images as we approached, and laughter bubbled up as we made funny faces.
I snapped a picture of Mia and Mom, capturing this unexpected moment of joy.
We continued our adventure, exploring the city's hidden gems and making memories that would last a lifetime.
As we wandered through the park, Mia suddenly stopped and turned to Mom with a thoughtful expression.
"Do you think Dad would have liked it here?" she asked softly.
Mom paused, her eyes reflecting a mix of emotions before she replied, "I think he would have loved it, and maybe that's why we're here now."
The Toothpaste Fairy
We continued our journey, our laughter echoing through the city streets.
The skyscrapers towered above us, casting long shadows as the sun began to set.
Mia pointed out a quaint café tucked between two bustling shops, its warm glow inviting us in.
We settled into a small table by the window, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee enveloping us.
Mom ordered hot chocolate for us, and we sipped it slowly, savoring the sweetness.
I spread the brochures across the table, pointing out places we hadn't seen yet.
Mia leaned over, her eyes scanning the pages before she suggested a visit to the nearby aquarium.
The Toothpaste Fairy
Just then, Mom's phone rang, and she answered with a curious expression.
"Really? That would be amazing!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with surprise.
She glanced at us, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Mia and I exchanged puzzled glances as Mom ended the call and turned to us.
"A friend of mine just offered us a free city tour," she announced, her smile widening.
Relief washed over me at the thought of not getting lost in this vast city.
The Toothpaste Fairy
We gathered our belongings and stepped outside, where Mom's friend awaited us.
She was a lively woman with a warm smile, introducing herself as Lisa.
Her enthusiasm was contagious as she promised to show us the hidden gems of Chicago.
We followed her through the bustling streets, stopping at a quaint bookstore that Mia and I had been eyeing.
Inside, we browsed through shelves of colorful stories, running our fingers over the spines.
Lisa shared tales of the city's history, pointing out landmarks we would have missed on our own.
Next, she led us to a small art gallery tucked away in a quiet alley.
The walls were adorned with vibrant paintings, each one telling a unique story.
I wandered through the exhibit, mesmerized by the colors and emotions they evoked.
Mia sat on a bench, her sketchbook open as she captured the beauty around her.
Our tour concluded at a rooftop garden overlooking the city, its breathtaking views taking our breath away.
Lisa suggested we take a family photo together, and we gathered in front of the glittering skyline.
The Toothpaste Fairy
As we admired the city's beauty, dark clouds gathered unexpectedly.
The wind picked up, rustling the leaves and sending a chill through the air.
Lisa glanced at the sky, her expression shifting from joy to concern.
"We should head inside," she suggested, but before we could move, a flash of lightning illuminated the cityscape.
A deafening clap of thunder followed, causing Mia to clutch my arm tightly.
Her eyes were wide with fear as Mom ushered us toward the rooftop entrance.
But to our surprise, the door was locked.
Panic rose within me as rain began to pour down, soaking us instantly.
The Toothpaste Fairy
Lisa scanned the rooftop, her gaze darting from one end to the other.
Her eyes landed on a small maintenance door tucked away in the corner.
"This way!" she shouted over the howling wind, motioning us to follow.
We dashed across the slick surface, rain pelting our faces.
Mia's grip on my hand tightened as we reached the door.
Lisa fumbled with the handle, finally wrenching it open.
We stumbled inside, dripping and shivering, but relieved to be out of the storm's wrath.
The dimly lit corridor stretched before us, offering a moment of respite from the chaos outside.
