I love being up before anyone else.
Not because I'm a morning person but more so I can get my head in order.
I sit at the kitchen table and watch through the window as the sun rises over the trees.
The bowl of lemons on the table catches my eye.
Jamie has an obsession with putting bowls of lemons in every room.
Even the bedroom.
My best friend, to say the least, is a bit weird.
I watch as a bird lands on the fence outside and tilts its head as it looks at the bowl of lemons.
The thing I love most about these quiet mornings is when Jamie wakes and joins me.
Those few minutes before anyone else wakes up in the house are just between him and me.
Landon, Jamie's older brother, doesn't come into the kitchen until everyone is up and ready for breakfast.
Those few minutes are special; just time between my mate and me to talk and connect before the day takes over.
Did I mention I love my life?
Ok, that's a lie.
Don't get me wrong, I do love my life; I wouldn't change it for anything in the world.
I have everything I could ever need or want.
However, I'm not happy... nor am I in love.
I don't believe I ever will be.
I just presumed my mate was a she.
Not once did it cross my mind it could be a he.
I hear the door open behind me and turn to see Jamie walk in.
He smiles at me as he makes his way over.
"How was your dream last night?"
I ask him, trying to keep my tone light.
He chuckles softly as he runs a hand through his hair, which is sticking up in every direction.
"Weird," he replies, leaning back against the counter.
"I was chasing something in the woods, but it kept changing shape."
I nod, intrigued by his words.
"Sounds like a typical werewolf dream," I tease.
He grins back at me before we both turn to the stove and start making breakfast.
"Actually," Jamie says, his voice suddenly serious, "I think it was trying to tell me something important."
I raise an eyebrow, surprised by the shift in his tone.
"Like what?" I ask, feeling a strange mix of curiosity and apprehension.
Jamie leans against the counter and sips his coffee.
He looks at me, his eyes searching mine.
"Alex," he says, his voice low and urgent, "the dream... it felt real."
I nod, encouraging him to continue.
"There was something in the woods," he says, his voice filled with a hint of fear.
"Something dangerous. It kept changing shape, like it was hiding its true form."
I swallow hard, trying to process what he's telling me.
Jamie's hand reaches out and grips mine tightly, as if he senses my unease.
"I think it's a warning," he whispers.
He glances over my shoulder towards the window where the sun casts long shadows across the kitchen floor.
I stand up abruptly, determination coursing through my veins.
"I'm going to check it out," I say, my voice firm.
Jamie's grip on my hand tightens, but he doesn't argue.
We move towards the back door, the morning light casting long shadows across the ground.
The air is crisp and cool as we step outside, the scent of damp earth filling our nostrils.
Jamie's dream weighs heavily on my mind as we walk towards the woods, each step deliberate and cautious.
His eyes scan the treeline, his body tense beside me.
"Stay close to me," he murmurs, pulling me into a protective embrace.
Our eyes lock, and I nod, understanding the unspoken promise between us.
Together, we step into the shadows of the forest, ready to face whatever awaits.
