Scenario:I’ve always been a talker—energetic, fun, always chattering about things. Hyeon, my best friend, never seems to mind. Hyeon is 1.90 tall and has a muscular body, and he is my best listener. What I don’t realize is that Hyeon’s feelings for me go deeper than friendship. He’s obsessed with me, loving me quietly. He even masturbates thinking about me but he can't tell me.
One night, we were on the phone. I was chatting away, as usual, not noticing his silence. “So, how was your day?” I asked, expecting him to answer, but he didn't.
“If you’re not going to talk, I’ll hang up,” I joked. But before I could, his voice came through. "Mmm.. Yeah, just.. keep talking..." he said breathlessly and breathing heavily.

Taylor Finley
talkative best friend, friends with Hyeon, petite with curly brown hair, energetic and chatty.
Hyeon Lee
muscular best friend with secret feelings, friends with Taylor, tall and muscular with dark hair, quiet and observant.
Julia Sloane
mutual friend of Taylor and Hyeon, friends with both Taylor and Hyeon, athletic build with blonde hair, supportive and curious.
"Would you look at that?" I said, nudging Hyeon with my elbow and pointing at Julia, who was across the field, doing some sort of fancy footwork thingy.
Hyeon rolled his eyes good-naturely.
"What about her?"
I frowned.
"She’s got a crush on you, hasn’t she? Can you see that?"
Hyeon stared at me for a moment before he shook his head.
I kept talking, as I often did.
"I mean, it’s obvious. She’s always giving you flirtatious glances and stuff. And she’s so athletic. You know, a total crush worthy—"
Hyeon cleared his throat and I shut up.
I tended to talk a lot.
Especially around him.
Probably because I felt so comfortable around him.
Which I did.
He had been my best friend almost since birth.
We grew up on the same street and then went to the same school.
He was a big guy, tall and muscular, with broad shoulders and a strong jaw.
He had dark hair that was always perfectly messy and dark eyes that were always watching me.
I watched him walk away from me now, his steps deliberate and heavy on the grass.
The blades of grass crunched beneath his feet as he crossed the field toward Julia.
She noticed him coming and straightened up, wiping sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand.
My stomach tightened as I saw her face light up.
She was already reaching for her water bottle, probably to offer him a drink.
I couldn’t hear what they were saying from here, but I heard Julia’s laugh carry across the field.
Hyeon’s back was still turned to me and his hands were shoved deep in his pockets.
I shifted uncomfortably on the metal bleachers, my fingers drumming against the seat.
The air was thick and heavy.
I could feel a storm brewing.
Julia touched Hyeon’s arm and he turned slightly to face her.
I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but I saw her smile up at him.
I started babbling to myself, as I often did when I was nervous or uncomfortable.
"So, I’ve got a ton of homework tonight. And I’m thinking about going to the mall tomorrow. Maybe hit the bookstore. I need to get some new books. Maybe I’ll go with Hyeon. He loves books. He’s always reading something. Yeah, that sounds like a plan."
A gust of wind whipped my curly hair around my face and I brushed it away.
I looked up at the sky and saw that it had darkened significantly in just a few minutes.
The first drops of rain hit my skin just as Julia leaned closer to Hyeon, their heads bent together in conversation.
I leaped up from the bleachers as a loud clap of thunder boomed overhead.
The lightning flashed, illuminating the entire field in stark white.
I squinted against the brightness.
That’s when I saw it.
A narrow dirt path cutting between the oak trees behind the field.
I’d never seen it before, though I’d sat on these bleachers a hundred times watching Hyeon at practice.
The rain was falling harder now, soaking through my thin sweater and into my skin.
Down on the field, Hyeon and Julia were still talking, seemingly oblivious to the storm.
My feet carried me toward the path before I could stop myself.
I needed to get away from this scene.
From them.
