I was nine years old when I got my first pair of hand-me-down shoes.
They were two sizes too small, had Velcro straps, and were a weird greyish purple colour that didn’t match anything else in my wardrobe.
I hated those shoes so much I cried myself to sleep that night, wishing I had different parents who could afford to buy me cool stuff like the other kids.
But wishing didn’t change anything.
My parents were who they were, and they made a combined income of less than thirty thousand a year.
I had learned early on that if I wanted something, I had to learn to live without it or find an alternative way to get it.
In ninth grade, that alternative way was Cooper Bradford.
Cooper was the new kid in town, and he was without a doubt the richest kid I’d ever met in my life.
He lived in a house that was bigger than the church I attended every Sunday.
