I was never one to speak unless necessary, and even then I was always brief and to the point.
I didn’t like being the center of attention, and I found it easier to be silent rather than draw any notice to myself.
I had been taught from a young age that it was better for a woman to listen rather than speak, especially if she wanted any chance at a good marriage, so I held my tongue and bit back my thoughts.
It was easier that way.
It was also easier to let others think for me, rather than form my own thoughts and opinions.
It was simpler to just follow along with what everyone else was doing, rather than stand out and be different.
That way I could avoid being noticed, and I found comfort in being anonymous.
I didn’t want to be remembered or recognized, and I took great care to keep myself forgettable.
I knew how I appeared to others—shy, introverted, demure—and I took great care to keep up this appearance at all times.
It was easier for people to think me boring and unremarkable rather than have them find out my true nature: romantic, dreamer, idealist.
I didn’t want anyone to know the real me.
I wanted to remain a secret.
And so I kept my thoughts to myself and hid behind my shy exterior.
Hidden Royals
I sat with Niamh in the castle garden, in the hidden alcove beneath the rose arbor.
The afternoon sun filtered through the roses above us, casting dappled shadows on Niamh’s face as she sat across from me.
Her delicate fingers traced patterns on a fallen leaf, and I watched her movements with a pounding heart.
I wanted to speak, to break my silence and tell her all of my thoughts and feelings.
But I was afraid.
What if she didn’t understand?
What if she thought me foolish or naive?
I opened my mouth, then closed it again, twisting my hands in my lap.
Niamh looked up at me, her green eyes sparkling with warmth.
"What is it?" she asked softly.

I shook my head, unable to speak.
Niamh reached over and placed her hand over mine, stilling their nervous movement.
"You can tell me anything," she said gently.
Her touch gave me courage, and I took a deep breath.
"I've been pretending for so long, Niamh," I confessed, my voice barely above a whisper.

Her eyes widened slightly, but she didn't pull away.
"Why would you need to pretend with me?" she asked, her voice full of genuine concern.
My hands trembled as I stared at our intertwined fingers, unable to meet her gaze.
The garden was silent around us, the only sounds the distant chirping of birds and the rustle of leaves in the breeze.
Niamh squeezed my hand tighter, her thumb tracing gentle circles on my skin.
I focused on a fallen rose petal by my feet, gathering my courage as the afternoon sun warmed my face.
When I finally looked up, tears blurred my vision.
Niamh reached out with her free hand, brushing a tear from my cheek.
Her touch lingered there, soft and reassuring.
"I've been hiding who I am, afraid of what others might think," I admitted, my voice trembling with vulnerability.
Niamh's expression softened, and she leaned closer, her eyes filled with understanding.
"You don't have to hide from me," she whispered, her voice a soothing balm to my fears.
