Chapter 1
I was sixteen years old when I found out I was a superhero.
It wasn’t like in the movies, where you get bitten by a spider or struck by lightning and suddenly have super strength or can fly.
No, my powers had been suppressed for as long as I could remember.
And it wasn’t until my sixteenth birthday that I finally discovered the truth.
I was sitting in my room, staring at the pills on my bedside table.
My mother had been giving them to me for as long as I could remember, telling me they were vitamins to help me grow big and strong.
But I knew that wasn’t true.
There was something else going on, and I was determined to find out what it was.
I picked up one of the pills and rolled it between my fingers.
It was small and white, with no markings or logos to indicate what it really was.
I had always been small for my age—shorter and skinnier than the other kids at school.
Girls used to tease me about it, telling me that I looked like a child because I was so small and skinny, but I didn't mind.
There was something about my appearance that made me feel safe.
And then, a few months after my sixteenth birthday, I realized why I looked different from the others: It wasn't just because of my size; it was because I was a superhero—or at least I had the potential to be one.
My mother had hidden this truth from me.
She had lied to me about what the pills were.
That's why I did not grow like other girls my age.
She tried to suppress my powers, but she couldn't keep me away forever.
On that fateful night when I finally figured out what was going on, I didn't take the pill from its usual place on my bedside table.
I pretended to swallow it during dinner time and hid it under my tongue until Sarah checked on me before bedtime.
"Sarah," she said as she entered my room before bedtime.
"I left your pill in its usual spot."
"I know. Thanks, Mom," I said with a smile.
I waited for her to leave before spitting out the pill from under my tongue and into my hand.
For days, I did this: hiding the pill under my tongue during dinner time and pretending to swallow it before bedtime so that Sarah wouldn't get suspicious.
