Six months earlier…
I finally knew the name of the man who had been living with me for the past six months.
It wasn’t as if he had told me.
He was still in a coma.
But I now knew his identity, and it would change everything.
My eyes were glued to the television as if this was the only way I could truly believe it.
The anchor seemed to be staring right at me, her dark hair perfectly coiffed, her blue eyes piercing through the screen.
Hidden Heir
"Lucas Ross, the only son of billionaire businessman, Henry Ross, has been missing for six months. The family had given up hope of ever seeing him again, but a tip from an anonymous source led them to a small apartment in New York City. He was found unconscious and has been in a coma ever since."
I turned off the television.
The room seemed to grow heavier with the silence.
Lucas lay motionless on the couch, his chest rising and falling steadily.
I approached him cautiously, my heart pounding in my chest.
He was the heir to a fortune, and yet here he was, living with me in this small apartment.
Unaware of who he was or what had happened to him.
I had to protect him.
But how?
My mind raced through all the possibilities.
The doorbell rang sharply, breaking me out of my thoughts.
I hesitated for a moment before answering it. Paulina stood in the hallway, her blonde hair perfectly styled, her brown eyes flicking over to Lucas as I opened the door.
Hidden Heir
"Hi," she said with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
"I heard you were home today. I thought I’d come by and check on you."
I narrowed my eyes at her.
Paulina had been my best friend since we were kids, but I knew she was up to something.
She had been acting strange ever since Lucas showed up at my doorstep six months ago.
And now that I knew who he was, I knew why.
She wanted him for herself.
She wanted his money and his status.
But I couldn’t let that happen.
Not when he was still so vulnerable.
"Paulina, what are you really doing here?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
She glanced at Lucas again before meeting my gaze. "I just wanted to make sure you're not getting in over your head with this... situation."
"Over my head?" I repeated, crossing my arms. "Or are you worried I might actually help him remember who he is?"
Her smile faltered, and for a moment, her mask slipped. "You know as well as I do that if he remembers, everything changes—for both of us."
Hidden Heir
I nodded slowly, watching as she turned and walked away down the street.
Her steps were quick and determined, and I knew she was already planning her next move.
But I would be ready.
I would protect Lucas at all costs.
The doorbell rang again, echoing through the quiet house.
I hesitated for a moment before opening it to find a well-dressed couple standing on my doorstep.
They were both in their mid-fifties, with gray hair and wrinkles etched into their faces.
But even with the signs of aging, they still looked like they belonged in a magazine.
The man was tall and slender, with a kind face and piercing blue eyes.
The woman was shorter, with a rounder figure and a warm smile that seemed to reach out to me.
They both wore expensive-looking clothes, and I could tell they were used to being around money.
"Can we help you?"
Hidden Heir
I asked, trying to hide my nervousness.
The woman’s eyes flicked over to Lucas, who was still lying unconscious on the couch behind me. "We’re his family," she said, her voice trembling slightly.
"We’ve been searching for him."
I nodded slowly, realizing that this was the turning point I had been dreading.
Lucas’s family had found him, and now everything would change.
