I sat cross-legged on the floor, deep in thought as I turned the yellowed pages of the old memory book I’d pulled out of the closet.
It had been an ordinary three-ring binder at one point, but now it was bursting at the seams with pictures and mementos of every kind—ticket stubs, postcards, artwork, and more.
There were locks of hair tied with rubber bands, tiny handprints made in paint, and even a few baby teeth wrapped in tissue paper.
Every item triggered a memory, and I smiled through tears as I relived my daughter’s entire childhood from start to finish.
I hadn’t looked at the book in years—probably since she’d become a teenager and all our interactions had become fraught with drama and angst.
But now that she was almost ready to leave the nest and begin her own life at college, I could see everything with clarity once again.
The book stopped abruptly at her tenth birthday, with a giant cake covered in candles and a photo of the three of us hugging.
My husband had been working long hours at that point, trying to make partner at his law firm, so there were fewer entries after that.
But even with both of us contributing, there were huge gaps in the story of her life.
