I have known Jason Miller since kindergarten.
We were each other's best friends and would always have sleepovers at each other's houses.
Well, one night, I was having a sleepover at his house.
It was just like any other sleepover we had ever had before.
Except for one thing: he slipped me something in my drink.
I don't know what it was, but I'm guessing it was some kind of drug.
The next thing I knew, I was lying on his bed and he was taking off my clothes.
I was trying to tell him to stop, but I couldn't talk.
I felt so sick and the room was spinning.
I blacked out after that and didn't wake up until the next morning.
He was gone.
I woke up and stumbled out of his house, confused and afraid.
I went straight home and told my sister what happened.
She took me to the hospital and they did a rape kit.

I never heard from Jason again.
I tried calling him, but his mom said he had moved away.
I found out later that he had gone to live with his dad in another city.
It was like he just disappeared.
I tried to put it out of my mind and move on with my life.
But then I found out I was pregnant.
I was 16 years old and pregnant as a result of being raped by my best friend.
I was so ashamed and afraid.
I didn't know what to do or who to turn to.
My sister helped me through the pregnancy and delivery, but after that, I was on my own.
I raised my daughter for three years before I started dating again.
I met a guy named Mike and we started seeing each other.

He was nice enough, but I just wasn't feeling it.
We went on a few dates, but I couldn't bring myself to get intimate with him.
I just wasn't ready yet, I guess.
He understood and we remained friends for a while, but eventually he moved on with his life.
I didn't blame him at all.
It's not easy being with someone who has been through something like that. I'm still raising my daughter on my own, but I'm doing okay now.
I've gotten past the shame and anger and am moving on with my life.

I'm standing in front of the diner, my heart pounding in my chest.
I'm about to start my first day as a waitress.
I can hear the clatter of dishes and the chatter of patrons inside.
It's loud and overwhelming, but somehow, it's also comforting.
My sister had encouraged me to get this job.
She reminded me that I need to be independent and support myself and my daughter.
I take a deep breath and step inside.
The hostess greets me with a smile and leads me to the back where I'll clock in.
I tie on my apron and look out at the dining area.
It's bustling with people, but one face catches my eye.
A face from the past.
A face that I never thought I'd see again.

A face that knew Jason.
My hands tremble slightly as I approach his table.
He looks up, recognition flickering in his eyes.

"Hi," I say, trying to sound friendly.
"Can I take your order?"
He nods politely, his eyes never leaving mine.
I can see the surprise there, but also something else.
Something that looks almost like guilt.
He was one of Jason's friends.
They would come over to my house or Jason's house and spend the night.
We were all so close back then.
But now, it feels like a lifetime ago.
"What can I get for you?" he asks, his voice low and smooth.
I swallow hard, trying to keep my composure.
"I'll have the breakfast special, please," he says, handing me his menu.

I take it from him, my hands shaking slightly.
He watches me as I walk away, his gaze lingering on me a little longer than necessary.
I feel a shiver run down my spine as I enter the kitchen, needing a moment to collect myself before I go back out there.
I take a few deep breaths and then head back out into the dining area.
He's looking at his phone when I approach his table again.
"Can I get you anything else?" he asks as I set down his food. "No, thank you," he replies with a smile.
I nod and turn to leave, feeling a sense of relief wash over me.
"By the way," he calls out as I walk away.
"I heard about your daughter."
My heart drops in my chest as I turn back to look at him.
His eyes are still fixed on me and there's something in them that makes me feel uneasy.
I don't know what he wants or why he's bringing this up now, but I don't want to find out.
"She's beautiful, you know," he continues, his voice softer now.
I hesitate, unsure of how to respond, but manage to say, "Thank you."
He leans forward slightly, lowering his voice even more, "Jason never told you, did he?"
