Frank Steinberg
orphaned teenager, relationships with grandparents and later other supernatural beings, black hair, hazel green eyes, resilient and curious.
Larry Smok
cruel grandfather to Frank, married to Margaret Smok, bulky build with a perpetual scowl, abusive and resentful.
Margaret Smok
cruel grandmother to Frank, married to Larry Smok, stern face with sharp features, manipulative and coldhearted.
I woke up to the sound of birds chirping and the sun was already up.
I sat up and looked around, yes I said sat up because I don't have a bed.
I sleep on a thin mattress on the floor with a small blanket to keep me warm during the cold nights.
My name is Frank Steinberg and I'm 13 years old.
I live with my grandparents Margaret and Larry Smok in their house but not exactly in their house.
I sleep in a shed at the back of their house.
You see my grandparents don't like me because they hate my father and his legacy.
They hated him so much that they didn't even bother to inform me about his death or let me attend his funeral.
I got up and washed my face with the cold water from a rusty old bucket that was placed in the corner of the shed.
I had to use the same water to wash my face, hands, and feet.
I put on a pair of worn jeans and a faded T-shirt.
I walked out of the shed and headed towards the back door of the house.
I opened it slowly and sneaked into the kitchen.
I knew my grandparents would be in their bedroom sleeping so I took advantage of that and made myself some breakfast.
I ate quickly and quietly, trying not to make any noise that would wake them up.
I finished eating and headed out of the house.
As I was walking out of the house I heard my grandmother's sharp voice calling me from upstairs.
"Frank, don't forget to do your chores before you head off to school," she said in her usual sharp tone.
I sighed inwardly as I knew what that meant.
It meant that I would have to spend the next hour or so cleaning their living room, which was always cluttered with dust and dirt.
But I didn't have a choice, so I trudged back into the house and up the stairs to their living room.
As I began to clean, I could hear Larry grumbling in his sleep about something.
Margaret was already up and getting dressed in their bedroom.
She came out of their bedroom fully dressed in her usual black dress with her hair tied up in a tight bun.
She looked at me with her usual glare and said, "Don't slack off on your chores, boy. I expect this room to be spotless when I get back from work." Then she left the house without another word. I sighed inwardly as I continued cleaning the shelves in their living room.
The shelves were lined with all sorts of things that Margaret had collected over the years, including vases, figurines, books, and other knick-knacks.
As I dusted each shelf, I couldn't help but feel like they were all staring at me with their blank faces.
It was as if they were watching me, waiting for me to make a mistake so they could pounce on me.
I tried to shake off the feeling of unease that had settled over me as I continued cleaning.
As I was finishing up, Larry woke up from his sleep and started talking about something that caught my attention.
He was talking about a new exhibit at the local museum that had just opened up.
I paused, realizing this might be my chance to learn more about my father.
