Mrs. Figg's cat, Mr. Tibbles, was peering out of the window; he was a ginger cat with thick, fluffy fur and bright green eyes.

I wished animals could talk.
"Your cat's watching me," I said to Mrs. Figg.
"Oh, has he got his face to the window?" said Mrs. Figg.
"Yes."
"He's watching the street, dear," she said.
"He's a very clever cat, you know. He can read maps."
"Really?"
I said.
"Yes, of course he can," said Mrs. Figg.
"He's got a very clever face, hasn't he?"
She came over to the window and looked at Mr. Tibbles.
He turned from the window and jumped down from the table; then he padded over to his food dish and began to eat his breakfast.
"He's going to get some food, dear," said Mrs. Figg.
"Yes," I said.
"He looks clever."
"He is clever," said Mrs. Figg.
"Now, let's have some toast, dear."
"All right," I said.
