I love Renaissance festivals.
I go to as many as them as I can.
I like the food, the crafts, and the clothes.
But most of all, I like the attention.
I always wear fun, colorful socks.
And when I’m walking around in my skirt, people can see them.
And they comment on them.
And we strike up a conversation.
It’s a great way to meet new people.
And get some laughs.
Today I’m wearing a pair of pink ones with unicorns on them.
I have my boots on, but when I walk through the mud puddles, my socks get wet and peeking out from under my skirt.
I stop at a booth that sells roasted nuts.
I love the smell of them.
As I’m waiting in line, a group of actors come by and start pretending to put people in jail.
They’re funny and have everyone laughing.
Then they come to me and start joking about my socks.
"You wouldn’t happen to be hiding any gold in those, would you?" one of them asks.
I shake my head and smile.
"Nope."
"Well, we can’t take your word for it," another one says.
"Put her in the stocks."
Two of them pick me up and place me in the stocks.
They are locking the wooden beam down on top of me when Jack shows up and says, "I think you have the wrong girl."
The actors look at each other and then back at me in my socks.
"Are you sure?"
"It’s okay," I say to Jack.
Her Rebellious Heart
I remain bent over, my socked feet sticking out.
The actors are arguing about what to do with me.
The crowd is growing, drawn by the commotion.
One of the actors takes my boots off and says, "We have to check for contraband."
My pink unicorn socks are now completely visible.
Jack stands a few feet away, his arms crossed over his chest.
He’s not smiling, but I can tell he wants to be.
The autumn breeze is cool on my feet as I wiggle my toes.
The crowd chuckles at me in the stocks.
I look up and catch Jack’s eye.
Her Rebellious Heart
His expression changes from concern to amusement.
My heart races as he steps forward and walks toward me.
The actors and the crowd turn to look at him.
"She's not hiding gold, but she might be hiding something else," Jack says with a grin.
The lead actor raises an eyebrow and asks, "And what might that be?"
Her Rebellious Heart
Jack leans in closer, lowering his voice just enough for the crowd to lean in too, "A secret map to the best turkey legs in the festival."
I remain bent over in the stocks while Jack examines my boots, turning them over in his hands with exaggerated scrutiny.
His fingers trace along the worn leather seams, and he taps the heels methodically.
The crowd watches, expecting more festival theatrics.
Jack’s expression changes as his thumb catches on something near the heel.
He works at it carefully, maintaining his playful demeanor but shooting me a questioning look.
Her Rebellious Heart
I notice his movements become more deliberate, less theatrical.
His fingers press against the edge of the heel until a small click sounds.
