Oliver arriving to give me support, he is my brother's best friend. He is very handsome, and nice to him to take care about me.
I sat in the small waiting room, flipping through a worn copy of People, rolling my eyes at the ridiculous articles and ads.
I wasn't really reading it, just using it to keep my hands busy while I waited for news on my brother.
I glanced at the clock on the wall for what felt like the hundredth time.
Only five minutes had passed.
Five minutes that felt like an eternity.
I wondered if they were still in surgery?
Was everything okay?
Why hadn't anyone come out to update me?
I dropped the magazine to the table and rubbed a hand over my face, feeling the start of a headache coming on.
I dropped my head back, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath.
I could hear the sounds of the hospital around me.
Voices talking, phones ringing, carts being rolled down the hallways.
I was so focused on listening to everything going on around me that I didn't even notice when someone sat down in the chair next to me.
It wasn't until I heard a low chuckle that I opened my eyes to find Oliver Hayes sitting next to me, holding a cup of coffee.
He smiled at me and then looked down at the cup in his hand before he wrinkled his nose in disgust and tossed it into the trash can a few feet away.
"Fuck, that's disgusting. I'd rather drink out of the toilet than use this machine again."
He shook his head and then turned to me.
"How is he? Have you heard anything?"
I ran a hand through my short black hair, feeling it stand up in every direction.

I shake my head, "No news yet. Still waiting."
Oliver nods, his hazel eyes filled with concern.
He leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees, and we sit in silence for a moment.
I watch as he pulls out his phone, checking for any updates from the hospital staff.
The sounds of the hospital continue around us—doctors calling out orders, nurses rushing past.
Oliver sighs and puts his phone away, then turns to me.
"Want to grab something to eat from the cafeteria?" he asks.
I nod, and we stand up, heading towards the cafeteria.
As we walk, I notice the fluorescent lights overhead casting an eerie glow on the sterile white walls.
The smell of disinfectant hangs heavy in the air, making my stomach turn.
We pass by a nurse's station where a group of nurses are huddled together, speaking in hushed tones.
Their eyes flicker towards us as we walk by, but they quickly return to their conversation.
Heartbeats of Chance
The cafeteria is just down the hall, and I can already smell the greasy food wafting out of it.
My stomach growls at the thought of eating something, even if it's just a stale sandwich or a lukewarm cup of coffee.
As we enter the cafeteria, I'm struck by the cacophony of sounds—clanging dishes, murmured conversations, and the occasional burst of laughter.
Oliver leads me to a table near the window, and we sit down across from each other.
He gestures to the food counter, "What do you want? I'll go get it."
I shrug, "Whatever's quick. I don't really care."
Just as Oliver gets up to go grab our food, a loud crash echoes from the corner of the cafeteria.
A tray of drinks has been knocked over, and a harried-looking nurse is frantically trying to clean up the mess.
Oliver's eyes flicker towards the commotion before he turns back to me, a concerned expression on his face.
