The phone rings, shrill in the dead of night, piercing my eardrums and making my head throb.
I groan, rolling over on the mattress and slapping a hand down on the receiver, missing once, twice before managing to pick it up on the third try.
"Hello?"
I snap into the mouthpiece, my voice coming out hoarse from sleep.
"Brad?"
I ask, despite knowing it’s him.
Who else would call me at 2am?
There’s static on the other end before Brad’s voice comes through.
"Myles. Eva and Evan are missing."
My eyes snap open, fully awake now.
"What?"
I demand, sitting up on the bed and kicking off the covers.
"They went to get pizza at Bell Pizza with some friends and weren’t home by midnight. Then one of their friends called saying they’d disappeared."
I frown.
"Disappeared from Bell Pizza?"
I repeat, not believing it.
"Yeah. The police are staking out the place but we need someone on the inside. Will you do it? Will you—"
"Okay."
I cut him off.
"I’ll do it."

"Thank you," Brad says, his voice tight.
"Thank you, Myles."
I sit on the edge of the bed, phone still clutched in my hand.
"I’m going to call you back in a few minutes. I need to get some things straightened out."
"Okay," Brad says.
"Okay."
I hang up and dial his number again, this time calling the restaurant.
He answers on the first ring.
"Myles," he greets me.
"You’re not going to believe this but—"
"I need more details," I interrupt him.
"Where were Eva and Evan when they were last seen?"

"They went to Bell Pizza with some friends," Brad says.
"Their friends dropped them off at home around 9pm and they went straight to their rooms. I thought they were just going to bed early but…"
"But you don’t know for sure?"
"No. And I didn’t check on them because we were watching a movie and I didn’t want to disturb them."
"And when did they disappear?"
"I don’t know. But one of their friends called around 12:30am saying they’d been missing for over an hour. The police are staking out the place now but we need someone inside." "Tell me more about their visit to Bell Pizza," I say, grabbing a pen and pad of paper from the bedside table and jotting down some notes.
"What was different about it? Were there any problems?"
"They went with a group of friends and seemed fine. They dropped them off at home around 9pm like I said."
"And you don’t know what happened after that?"
"No. But there was something strange about that night. The animatronics were acting weird."
"What do you mean by weird?"
I ask, frowning at my notes.
"They moved around like normal but… it was like they were watching us. The staff said they moved around a lot more than usual too. It freaked a lot of people out."
I make another note on my pad.
"And no one saw anything unusual?"
Brad sighs.
"Not that anyone is saying. But I think some of the staff are spooked enough that they won’t work tonight."
"Okay. Well, we’ll be there at midnight then," I say.
"I’ll see what I can find out."
"You’re not going to work tonight?" he asks, sounding surprised.

I step into the dimly lit restaurant, the air thick with the smell of stale cheese and grease.
The animatronics stand eerily still in their corners, their eyes following me as I move.
I check my watch, the face glowing in the dark—midnight.
Brad joins me a minute later, flashlight in hand, casting long shadows across the room.
We start our patrol, peering into every nook and cranny, searching for any sign of Eva and Evan.
We’ve been searching for about twenty minutes when a clatter echoes from the kitchen.
I gesture to Brad to stay back as I edge closer.
I see a flicker of movement—a small figure darting behind a counter.
"Who's there?" I call out, trying to keep my voice steady.
A young voice responds, trembling, "It's me, Evan. Please don't be mad."
"Evan!" I exclaim, relief flooding through me. "Where's Eva?"

"She's here," Evan says, his voice shaking.
"She's hiding."
I glance back at Brad, who's watching from the doorway, a tense expression on his face.
I take a deep breath and move forward, trying to reassure Evan.
"It's okay," I say.
"We're not going to hurt you. We just want to find Eva."
"I know," Evan says, his voice cracking.
"But I'm scared. There's something bad in here."
I can see that Evan is really scared, so I try to stay calm and speak softly.
"It's okay," I say again.
"We'll get through this together."
I move slowly towards him, trying not to startle him.

As I get closer, I see that he's hiding behind a counter, his eyes wide with fear.
"Evan," I say gently.
"Come out. It's okay."
He hesitates for a moment, then slowly crawls out from behind the counter.
I kneel down next to him and wrap my arms around him in a hug.
"It's okay," I say again, trying to reassure him.
"We're here now."
Evan hugs me back tightly, still trembling with fear.
After a minute, he pulls back and looks at me with wide eyes.
"Where's Eva?" he asks. "We'll find her," I say gently.
"Don't worry."
Brad joins us in the kitchen, shining his flashlight around the room.
"Have you seen anything unusual?" he asks Evan.
Evan shakes his head.
"No. But there's something bad in here. I can feel it."
Brad nods seriously.
"Don't worry," he says.
"We'll get you out of here safely."
But before we can move, a loud crash echoes from the dining area.
"What was that?"
Eva asks, her voice trembling even more than before.
"I don't know," Brad says grimly.
"But we need to go see what it is."
He shines his flashlight towards the doorway and moves cautiously towards it.
