I love horror stuff.
Not just the movies and shows, but the games and stories too.
There's just something about getting scared that I enjoy.
Maybe it's the rush of adrenaline, or maybe I'm just a masochist.
Either way, I always enjoy a good scare.
Which is why I was so excited to go to this abandoned arcade my best friend, Jess, had told me about.
Jess and I have been friends since we were kids, and we were both going to the same high school now.
We made plans with another friend of ours, Mike, to meet there after school and explore it.
Because if there's one thing horror has taught me, it's that abandoned places are just begging to be haunted.
I arrived at the arcade first, and it was definitely creepy from the outside.
The building was old and worn, with faded paintings of animatronics and kids having fun on the walls.
There was a large sign that said "Welcome to " in faded letters, but the rest of it was so worn away that I couldn't tell what the place used to be called.
I shivered a little at the thought of how long the place must have been abandoned, and jumped when I heard a loud bang behind me.
Or at least, I would have, if I were easily scared.
Instead, I rolled my eyes as I turned to see Jess pushing open the creaky door behind me.
Haunted Arcade
"Jesus, Jess. You scared me," I said, following her into the dimly lit arcade.
The only light came from the flashlights we had brought, and the small amount of sunlight that filtered in through the boarded up windows.
Our footsteps echoed on the dusty floor, and I could smell the musty air filling my lungs.
It was definitely a creepy place.
"Sorry," Jess said, her voice low as she looked around.
She pulled out her phone and turned on the flashlight app, adding to the light from my own flashlight.
I swept my light across the room, taking in rows and rows of what looked like arcade cabinets covered in sheets.
There were old posters on the walls, torn and faded with time.
One caught my eye, and I walked over to examine it more closely.
It was a picture of what looked like a bear animatronic, wearing a red hat and holding a guitar.

The words "Rock-afire Explosion" were written above it in bold letters.
I wondered if this was what the place used to be called before it was abandoned.
I turned back to see Jess and Mike standing together, examining some of the other posters on the wall.
I frowned when I saw Mike had brought Em along with him, even though Jess and I had specifically told him not to.
Em was one of those annoying girls who always had to have her nose in everything.
She was always posting videos online of her "adventures," but they were really just vlogs of her doing stupid crap like eating spicy food or going into abandoned buildings. I was about to make a sarcastic comment when I heard a creak behind me.
I turned to see Em slipping in through the door that Jess had pushed open.
She had her phone out already, recording everything for her stupid channel.
"Hey guys," she said brightly, bouncing over to us with a big smile on her face.
Her blonde hair was tied back in a ponytail, and she was wearing a bright pink sweater that matched her lipstick perfectly.
"I'm so excited to explore this place."
Jess gave me an apologetic look as Em bounced over to us excitedly, but I just rolled my eyes at her.
"Em," I said dryly, "what are you doing here?"
"I invited her," Jess said quickly before Em could respond.
"She wanted to come along."

I raised an eyebrow at Jess, who looked down at her feet guiltily.
"I didn't think you'd mind."
I sighed, swallowing my irritation.
"Whatever. Let's just get this over with."
I gestured for everyone to follow me, and we all walked past the front area of the arcade.
The flashlights we were carrying made it look like there were a million tiny stars floating in the air around us, but I knew they were really just dust particles being kicked up by our footsteps.
We moved between rows and rows of what looked like arcade cabinets, all of them shrouded in sheets.
The beams from our flashlights caught something shiny behind one of the sheets, and I walked over to investigate.
My heart was pounding in my chest as I reached out to pull the sheet away, despite my best efforts to stay calm.
"Maybe we'll find some treasure," Mike joked nervously as he and Jess came up behind me.
Em was right on their heels, her phone still recording everything for her channel.
She was whispering excitedly into the camera, but her voice was so loud in the silent building that it made me jump. "Shh," I hissed at her, but she just winked at me and kept talking.
Haunted Arcade
I reached out slowly to pull the sheet away, my fingers trembling slightly.
I didn't know why I was so nervous - it was probably just an old game cabinet or something.
But there was something about this place that had me on edge.
"Wait," Jess said suddenly, grabbing my arm.
"Did you hear that?"
Haunted Arcade
Mike's eyes widened as he nodded, "Yeah, it sounded like... a laugh?"
I yanked my arm out of Jess's grasp and swung my flashlight around, pointing it towards the back of the arcade.
The laugh had sounded like it had come from back there, but I couldn't hear anything now.
The beam from my flashlight cut through the dusty air, illuminating a door that was partially open.
It looked like it was supposed to be locked, but the sign on the front said "Employees Only."
Em's excited whispering filled the silence, and I heard the click of her phone camera as she took a picture of the door.
Mike took a step closer to me, his voice low.
"Maybe we should get out of here," he said, but I was already moving forward.
Something about that door was drawing me in.
I could feel it calling to me, and I couldn't resist.
I stepped through the doorway, and suddenly the laugh was right next to me again.
Haunted Arcade
It was higher pitched this time, sounding more like a child's giggle mixed with static. I spun around quickly, shining my light behind me.
I thought I saw something move in the doorway - a flash of metal and fur - but when I turned my light back it was gone.
"Did you guys see that?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the pounding of my heart.
Jess shook her head, her eyes wide with fear. "No, but I felt something cold brush past me."
Em lowered her phone for a moment, her bravado slipping. "I think we just found the real reason this place was abandoned."
Haunted Arcade
I huddled closer to the others as we all looked down at the screen of Em's phone.
She rewound the last few seconds of footage, and I could see a dark shape moving behind the arcade cabinets.
It was too tall and angular to be human, but it was also too quick to really see.
"Here," Em said softly, her voice trembling.
She zoomed in on the figure, and I could see that it was wearing what looked like an old security uniform.
There was a tarnished name badge on the front that read "Rock-afire Explosion."
The figure slipped into a wall, but there didn't look like there was an opening there.
I frowned as I looked around, and Mike pointed to some faint marks on the floor leading right up to that spot.
I ran my fingers over the surface of the wall, feeling around until I found a slight depression in the surface.
I pressed it, and a small panel slid open, revealing a narrow maintenance corridor. The air that came out was stale and musty, filled with the smell of old electronics and decay.

I coughed as I breathed it in, covering my mouth with my hand.
Jess stepped forward, shining her light down the corridor.
It disappeared into darkness about ten feet in.
I stepped into the corridor first, my light cutting through thick cobwebs that hung from the ceiling.
The walls were so close together that we were forced to walk single file, and I could hear the sound of Em's camera light flickering as she followed behind me.
The metal floor creaked under our feet as we walked, and every step echoed down the passage.
The smell grew worse as we moved forward, becoming a pungent mix of old electronics and grease.
Behind me, I could hear Mike's breathing growing more rapid and shallow.
Haunted Arcade
"Maybe we should turn back," Jess whispered, but I was already moving forward.
There was something drawing me deeper into the corridor, something I couldn't quite hear or see.
It was like a faint humming noise, but it seemed to be coming from all around me.
