I hated him from the moment he stepped into my house.
I didn’t know who he was or what he wanted, but I knew I didn’t like him.
He was too arrogant and controlling, and I could tell just by looking at him that he was a man who always got what he wanted.
Women probably fawned all over him, just because of his piercing blue eyes and his tall, muscular body.
I wasn’t one of them.
I had no idea what he wanted with me, but I knew I wasn’t going to make it easy for him.
"Who are you?" I asked again.
"You know who I am," he said, looking around my house as if he was taking in every detail.
He seemed to be in no hurry to leave or to explain himself.
"I don’t," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
"You’re not from around here," he said, turning his gaze back to me.
It was unnerving, the way he could see right through me.
Most people couldn’t do that.
Most people didn’t even try.
"I am now," I said, trying to keep my voice light.
"Are you living here alone?" he asked, looking around the room again.
It was clear that he already knew the answer to that question.
Hate To Love You
I stepped back as he moved closer, but he didn’t come any nearer to me.
He stopped in the middle of my small living room and looked around again.
The evening light coming through the window cast shadows on his face, making it impossible for me to read his expression.
"Can I help you?"
I asked, trying to keep my voice from shaking.
"I’m just looking around," he said, walking over to my coffee table.
He picked up one of the medical textbooks that was sitting there and opened it.
I curled my fingers into fists at my sides as he flipped through the pages, not answering my question.
He was completely ignoring me, as if I wasn’t even here.
I wanted to tell him to put down my book and get out of my house, but I couldn’t bring myself to say the words.

The silence stretched out between us, and I could feel his eyes on me even though I wasn’t looking at him. Finally, he looked up from the book and set it back down on the table with a deliberateness that made me want to scream.
"Because," he said, answering the question I had asked several minutes ago, "I’m your new hospital administrator, Dr. Bennett. And we’ll be working very closely together."
The blood drained from my face as he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out some official-looking paperwork.
I scanned the pages, my irritation growing with each line I read.
It was everything I had feared and more.
This man was going to be a constant presence in my life, and I couldn’t stand it.
He leaned over my shoulder, his breath hot against my neck as he pointed to specific clauses in the contract that required me to work closely with him on the hospital renovations.
I stepped away from him, but he followed me, keeping the same distance between us.
It was suffocating.
I turned and walked into the kitchen, gripping the edge of the counter as if it was the only thing holding me up.
He followed me, opening cabinets and helping himself to a mug from my coffee maker.
The casual way he moved around my kitchen, as if he had been there before, made me want to scream. "Here," he said, handing me the paperwork with a tight smile on his face.
"Read through this and let me know what you think."
Hate To Love You
I took the papers from him, my hands shaking with anger.
I forced myself to smile back at him, but I knew it looked more like a grimace.
I flipped through the pages without reading a word, my mind racing with ways to get out of this situation.
He leaned against my kitchen counter, sipping my coffee from my favorite mug, watching me with those calculating eyes.
When I reached the final page, I set the stack down on the counter and crossed my arms.
"I'll need time to review these properly," I said, turning and walking back into the living room.
I moved toward my front door, hoping he would take the hint and leave.
He didn’t budge, just took another slow sip of his coffee.
"Take all the time you need, Dr. Bennett," he said, his voice dripping with condescension.
"I'll expect your signature by tomorrow morning."
My jaw clenched at his casual command.
I strode to the door and wrenched it open, standing aside so he could leave.
