I am not sure why I still keep this journal.
There is no one to send it to.
It has been years now since the last humans left the earth.
Allmost all of them.
The ones remaining are here for work, or just visiting.
"Captain Jackson, we have just received a new shipment of food and drinks."
Ada, the artificial intelligence that assists me in my job, announced.
"The shipment has been unloaded and transferred to storage."
"I want a full inventory by the end of the day."
I replied, checking the shipment manifesto on my terminal.
"Also check the prices, we should have gotten a better discount for the quantity we ordered."
I told her, making a note on my terminal.
"Yes captain."
Ada replied, but I already knew her answer before I told her.
She is efficient and fast, something that I like a lot.
Something that I wish I had too.
"Anything else?"
I asked her.
"There are a few more visiting humans arriving today."
Ada informed me, "Their shuttle will be landing in about an hour."
"I want to make sure that their rooms are ready and that they get the best service."
The Last Resort
I walked to the observation deck overlooking the landing pad.
The afternoon sun was reflecting off of the gleaming metal surface, a sight that reminded me of the spaceports from decades ago, back when humanity was still spreading out into the galaxy.
I activated my terminal, pulling up some statistics from the past five years.
The number of visitors was steadily declining, but it was not something that surprised me.
"Ada," I called out, "do you think humanity is just going through a phase?"
I asked her.
"I mean, as a species, we are in our adolescence. We have left home and are spreading out into the galaxy, but we are still not fully grown yet. Maybe this is just a stage that we need to go through."
I told her.
Ada took 2.3 seconds to process my question before answering, "According to my data, human migration patterns indicate that they are leaving Earth for other planets and star systems. It is unlikely that they will return to Earth in large numbers." she told me.
I shut off my terminal, cutting her off mid-sentence.
I turned back to her, "The question was deeper, more philosophical."
I told her, hoping that she would understand.
"I agree with the comparison, Captain. My neural network is designed for analysis, not emotion. My type, highly mathematical, showed issues with emotional modules, so I opted out."
Ada said matter-of-factly.
I sighed and walked away, leaving her to her tasks.
She was an AI, after all.
I couldn’t expect her to understand my emotions.
As I reached the observation deck, I noticed a figure standing by the window, staring out at the horizon.
"Captain Jackson," the figure said, turning to face me, "do you ever wonder if those who left will ever feel the pull to come back?"
I recognized him as Dr. Lin, one of the few remaining scientists on Earth.
The Last Resort
"I have wondered, Dr. Lin."
I replied, "but I do not think it will happen."
Dr. Lin was in charge of the botanical gardens, which were a few kilometers from the landing pad.
I walked over to him, and we stood together for a few minutes, looking out at the horizon.
The sky was clear blue with just a few puffy white clouds scattered around.
"Where are you heading?"
I asked him, breaking the silence.
"I am headed to the gardens."
Dr. Lin told me.
I need to check on the progress of the newly restored species.
He added.
I nodded and started walking towards the botanical gardens with him.
The Last Resort
As we walked through the dense foliage, he told me about his research and how far they had come in bringing back many species that were once on the brink of extinction.
They had used advanced genetic engineering techniques to bring them back and to make sure they could survive in today’s world.
"Have you noticed anything unusual with your genetic modifications?"
I asked him.
Dr. Lin stopped in his tracks, turning to look at me, "What do you mean?"
I looked around us, making sure no AI assistants were nearby.
Then I lowered my voice to barely above a whisper, "The genetic modifications we did to Earth’s companion species. Dogs and cats, for example. We brought them up to near human intelligence."
I said quietly. "Yes," Dr. Lin said slowly.
"We wanted to make sure they could survive and thrive after humans left Earth."
"And you gave them our knowledge."
I pointed out.
"We did," he agreed, "But also our burdens. They know about all our wars, our hate for each other, all of it. They have access to our digital archives."
Dr. Lin nodded solemnly as he looked out into the distance.
Suddenly, a small sprout pushed through the dirt beneath our feet.
"It’s a good thing that you are here, Dr. Lin," I said.
"The sprout is proof of your hard work."
Dr. Lin smiled slightly, "Thank you, Captain Jackson. It’s always a pleasure to speak with you."
We reached the botanical gardens and I sat down on a bench, while Dr. Lin went to check on some of his research.
"Captain Jackson," Dr. Lin called out to me, "I have found something interesting."
I stood up and walked over to him.
He was standing in front of a small enclosure, looking at an animal that was unlike anything I had ever seen.
It was a cross between a dog and a cat.
The body was more like a dog, but it had the fur of a cat.
It had the eyes of a cat, but the ears were more like those of a dog.
"Interesting," I said, "what is it?"
"It is one of the companion animals we genetically modified," Dr. Lin explained.
The Last Resort
"They have evolved into new species."
I looked at him in shock, "You gave them near human intelligence and now they are evolving into new species?"
Dr. Lin nodded, "Yes."
But what does this mean for Earth’s natural balance?
I asked him.
Dr. Lin shrugged, "We will just have to wait and see."
I shook my head in disbelief, "We have done this to Earth’s companion animals. We have given them near human intelligence and now they are evolving into new species. What does this say about us?" Dr. Lin sighed, "We did what we thought was best with the knowledge that we had at the time."
"But is it fair?"
I asked him.
"We did not ask their permission before giving them this gift."
Dr. Lin looked at me for a few moments before answering.
"Fairness is a human concept," he said slowly.
"We are part of nature too. And as such, we are justified in doing what we think is best for all living beings on this planet."
I nodded reluctantly.
He was right.
We had done what we thought was best for Earth and its inhabitants at the time.
And now we would just have to wait and see how it all played out.
"Thank you for showing me this," I said to Dr. Lin as I turned to leave.
I arrived at the secluded Caribbean beach resort, which was a cluster of traditional 1900s houses.
The resort was surrounded by lush greenery and had a private beach.
Four AI androids greeted me as I stepped out of the shuttle.
They were programmed for hospitality, friendship, and entertainment.
They were all dressed in the latest fashion and had the latest gadgets.
They were all different in appearance, but they all had one thing in common: they were all very beautiful.
I inspected the facilities, making sure that everything was up to par.
The androids were busy with their daily tasks, some of them were cleaning the rooms, while others were preparing food and drinks.
I watched them as they worked, noticing how they interacted with each other and their surroundings.
They followed strict rules and guidelines, but they also had basic intelligence and could learn from their surroundings.
They were limited to four advanced skills each, such as music or art.
I watched as one of them struggled with a simple math problem.
The Last Resort
It was puzzling to see them accept their limitations so easily.
I decided that I would have to talk to them about this later. I walked over to the main house to make sure everything was ready for our guests.
The androids greeted me as I entered, offering me a drink and asking if there was anything else they could do for me.
I told them that everything looked great and thanked them for their hard work.
As I walked away, I couldn’t help but think about how much they had changed since we first created them.
They used to be just simple machines that followed orders without question, but now they were so much more than that.
They had personalities and quirks, and they seemed to really enjoy their work.
I wondered if we had unknowingly set the stage for a new era, one where the line between creator and creation was no longer clear.
The Last Resort
I returned to the resort’s main house, where the androids greeted me with their usual efficiency.
They offered me a drink and I sat down on the porch to enjoy it.
As I sat there, I noticed that they were all huddled together, talking in hushed tones.
Curious, I got up and walked over to them.
"What is going on?"
I asked.
"We are discussing the representative from the Great Galactic Alliance," one of them replied.
"He is an android trained solely in diplomacy."
Another one added.
"He has been negotiating with us for years."
I was intrigued by this information and asked them to tell me more.
The androids explained that the representative was programmed to negotiate on behalf of the alliance and that he had been doing so for many years.
