I was the perfect husband — handsome, wealthy, and willing to do anything for my family.
But Maiko, my wife, cheated on me with some unemployed guy, using my money and my bed to have fun.
I found out quickly, but she didn’t feel bad at all.
Eventually, she realized that love isn’t enough to survive and ended up on the streets for years.
Her lover ditched her once he got bored and found someone new to leech off.
When we met again, I invited her back to my house.
She first thought it was a chance to fix everything, but not in the way she expected.
I gave her food, clothes, and a roof over her head—but only as a servant.
She stayed, willing to endure my coldness, hoping to make up for her past mistakes.
I sit at the dining table, watching Maiko serve dinner with precision and care.
Her movements are smooth, her hands steady, but her eyes flicker with hope.
She’s been serving me for weeks now, and she’s become quite skilled at it.
I take a bite of my food, savoring the taste of the expertly cooked meal.
Maiko waits patiently by the sideboard, her eyes fixed on me as I eat.
When I’m finished, she clears the table quickly and efficiently, disappearing into the kitchen to wash up.
I retire to the living room after dinner, settling into my favorite chair to read the newspaper.
Maiko appears a few minutes later with a tray of coffee and pastries.
She sets it down on the end table beside me and curtsies politely before retreating to her corner of the room.
I sip my coffee and read the newspaper for a while, enjoying the quiet comfort of my home.
As I read, I notice that Maiko is sitting in her usual spot in the corner, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
I set my newspaper aside and look at her more closely. "Maiko," I say, my voice low and serious.

"Yes, sir," she responds immediately, rising from her chair to stand before me.
"I have another task for you."
"Yes, sir," she says again, her voice steady but her eyes flickering nervously.
"This one is a bit different from the others," I tell her.
"It’s not something you can do alone. You’ll need to work with others."
"Yes, sir," she says once more, though I can see the doubt in her eyes.
"You know that I have a lot of money," I say, looking at Maiko closely.
"And you know that I don’t like to waste it. But this task requires that you spend some of that money."
Maiko nods slowly.
What is the task?
"The next task is to serve my deepest desire."
Maiko’s eyes widen slightly at this statement, and she takes a step back from me instinctively.
I can see fear rising in her—fear of what I might ask her to do for this task.
But she doesn’t run away or refuse my request.
Instead, she takes a deep breath and looks at me steadily.
"What is your deepest desire?" she asks quietly.
"I want to help those who have fallen on hard times," I tell her honestly.

Maiko looks at me curiously.
She’s clearly not sure what I mean by this statement, but she doesn’t ask any questions.
Instead, she waits for me to explain.
"I want to help those who have been abused, those who have lost their way in the world," I continue.
"I want to provide a safe place for them to escape, a place where they can feel protected and cared for."
Maiko nods slowly, her eyes never leaving mine.
She understands now what I mean by my deepest desire.
I reach into my pocket and pull out a checkbook, flipping it open to a blank page.
I scribble a few lines on the page before tearing it out and handing it to Maiko.
"This is the first step in making my deepest desire a reality," I tell her.
"It’s a check for $10,000. I want you to use this money to fund a women’s shelter for abuse victims."
Maiko takes the check from me, her shoulders relaxing slightly as she realizes that my deepest desire is not something sinister.

She looks at the check in her hand, then back at me.
"Yes, sir," she says quietly. "I want you to work with the local authorities to find a suitable location for the shelter," I tell her.
"And then I want you to use this money to purchase everything that will be needed for the shelter."
Maiko nods slowly, her eyes flicking between me and the check in her hand.
"I also want you to make sure that the shelter is run by someone trustworthy," I continue.
"Someone who will truly care for those who come seeking help."
Maiko nods again, her eyes never leaving mine.
"Finally, I want you to make sure that there is always enough money available for the shelter," I tell her.
"I want you to set up an account specifically for donations so that people can give whatever they are able."
Maiko nods once more, her shoulders relaxing further as she realizes that this task is not going to be difficult for her.
She takes a step back from me and curtsies politely before turning and hurrying off towards the kitchen.
I watch her go, feeling a sense of satisfaction wash over me.
This task will be good for Maiko—it will allow her to do something meaningful and help others at the same time. As Maiko disappears into the kitchen, I turn back to my newspaper and continue reading.

Maiko spends the next few days making phone calls and setting up meetings with various city officials.
She spends hours in the study, her notebook filling with contacts and requirements for the shelter.
I can hear her talking on the phone sometimes, her voice rising and falling as she discusses the finer points of setting up a non-profit organization.
One day, I hear Maiko mention her maiden name to someone on the phone.
The line goes quiet for a moment, and I wonder what has happened.
Then, a new voice comes on the line, one that is older and more authoritative than the previous one.
Maiko listens intently for a few moments before responding.
"Hello, Mrs. Chen," she says, her voice steady.
"I’m so glad to hear from you."
Mrs. Chen is none other than the head of the Chen Foundation, one of the largest charitable organizations in the city.
She’s known for her generosity and her willingness to help those in need.
I step into the study to see Maiko sitting at the desk, phone in hand.

Her eyes are wide as she listens to Mrs. Chen speak.
"I’m so glad to hear that you’re interested in our project," Maiko says after a few moments.
"We’re looking to create a safe space for women who have been abused or abandoned. It will be a place where they can come to feel protected and cared for."
Maiko listens for a while longer before responding. "Yes, we would be happy to have your support," she says.
Your donation would be greatly appreciated.
There’s another pause as Maiko listens to Mrs. Chen speak again.
"Really?" she asks finally, her voice filled with excitement.
"That would be amazing."
Maiko listens for a few more minutes before hanging up the phone.
She turns to me, hand trembling as she holds it out towards me.
"Sir," she says softly, "Mrs. Chen would like to speak with you."
I take the phone from Maiko and press it to my ear.
"Hello?" I say into the receiver.
"Ethan Ryder here."
"Hello," Mrs. Chen says immediately.
"It’s so nice to speak with you again."
"I'm glad to hear from you too," I respond politely.
"I heard about your interest in creating a women’s shelter. That’s quite admirable of you."
"Thank you," I say humbly.
It’s something that I feel very strongly about.
"I can understand that," Mrs. Chen replies.
"I’d like to offer my foundation’s full support for this project."
"That’s incredibly generous of you, Mrs. Chen," I respond, genuinely surprised.
"Well, Ethan, it seems we both have a vested interest in helping those who need it most."
