Today
I never wanted to be anything.
I never had ambitions or desires.
I’ve always been just okay with everything.
I don’t really care about anything, and I guess that’s what makes me okay at everything.
I’m not great at anything, but I’m not terrible at anything, either.
I’m ordinary.
My name is Caleb Thompson, and I live in a small town doing the only thing I was ever half good at: mechanics.
That’s me in a nutshell.
Nothing exciting.
Nothing interesting.
Just…me.
I wake up early, getting dressed for work, then head to my kitchen to make some coffee and wait for the caffeine to wake me up a bit before I head out.
As I walk toward the garage door, which leads from my house to the one I own and work out of behind my house, I notice it’s already open.
Only a few inches, but that’s enough for the light from the sun to creep in and shine across the dark floor.
I frown, wondering why it was open, and push it up to get in and start my day.
That’s when I see her.
A woman.
Hiding in the shadows of my garage.
She’s dressed all in black and holding a gun tight in her hands.
Her eyes are trained on the opening of the door I just came through.
Her body language screams fear and desperation.
