An IPS officer with a spotless record and an even more unyielding demeanor, His days were meticulously planned, his movements precise, He believed in leading by example, embodying the very principles he preached: duty, integrity, and unwavering focus.
He was tall, with sharp features, a perpetually serious expression, and eyes that seemed to see right through you.
His uniform was always impeccably pressed, his boots gleaming.
He was the elder son of his parents.
Born and brought up in Delhi, he had been influenced greatly by his grandmother who lived with them.
She was the one to have instilled in him the importance of tradition and culture.
He never argued with his parents or anyone else for that matter.
He believed that elders were always right and must be obeyed.
Never had he been in a situation where he had raised his voice or even been remotely angry.
He was a good son, brother, and officer.
Sirisha Khanna was 18 years old and had just cleared her NEET exam but nobody at her home knew about this.
She wanted to become a Doctor but nobody at her home was ready to allow her to study further.
Born after two siblings, she had never been valued by her family.
Her father Akhilesh and mother Dipti had always wanted a son but unfortunately, she was born after her elder brother Ajay and elder sister Deepika.
Both of them were married to their respective partners and had one child each.
They also never supported her like their parents.
Something had happened in her past due to which she didn't like social gatherings or communicating with unknown people.
A depressed soul, suffering from trauma, scared of even loud voices.
Has been living a horrible life.
Her only safe place was her grandmother who died when she was 12 and since then she was utterly alone.
Her parents or family never acknowledged her they treat her badly.
She was shy, the quietest person ever.
Never start a conversation until someone approaches her first.
She was a sweet, kind, caring person with the most beautiful heart and ethereal personality.
Very emotional and her eyes expressed everything.
Loves kids a lot this is the reason she wanted to be a Doctor.
The engagement ceremony was a blur of rituals and formalities.
I stood beside Sirisha, her eyes downcast, avoiding mine.
Her silence mirrored my own, both of us trapped in a decision made for us.
My grandmother's approving nods were the only reassurance I had.
As the priest chanted, I noticed Sirisha's trembling hands.
I wanted to reach out, to offer comfort, but remained rooted, bound by tradition and duty.
After the ceremony, we exchanged polite words, our conversation stilted and awkward.
Her quiet resignation echoed my internal conflict.
"Reyansh," Sirisha's voice was barely above a whisper, "do you ever wish things were different?"
He hesitated, glancing at her with a mixture of surprise and understanding, "Every day, Sirisha, but duty has a way of silencing wishes."
Her eyes met his for the first time, a flicker of hope igniting within them, "Maybe together we can find a way to change that."
The morning after our engagement, I sat at my desk, meticulously reviewing case files.
The room was quiet, save for the rhythmic ticking of the clock.
My mind, however, wandered back to Sirisha's question from the previous night.
Just then, a knock interrupted my thoughts.
I rose to answer it, expecting a colleague or perhaps a messenger.
Instead, a courier stood before me, holding an envelope addressed to both Sirisha and me.
Curiosity piqued, I opened it cautiously, revealing a letter that spoke of an undisclosed family fortune tied to my late grandfather.
The words hinted at a new life abroad, away from the constraints that had bound us thus far.
"Reyansh, did you know about this?" Sirisha asked, her voice trembling with a mix of disbelief and anticipation.
"No," he replied, his brow furrowed in thought, "this is the first I've heard of any family fortune."
She took a deep breath, her eyes searching his, "Do you think this could be our chance to break free and start anew?"
The letter lay open on my desk, its words echoing in my mind.
The idea of a new life abroad was both thrilling and terrifying.
I thought of Sirisha, her quiet strength and unspoken dreams.
My phone buzzed, interrupting my thoughts.
It was Sirisha, her voice soft yet determined.
She wanted to meet and discuss the possibilities the letter presented.
I agreed, feeling a mix of hope and fear.
Later that day, we sat at a quiet café, away from prying eyes.
The letter lay between us, a tangible representation of the unknown.
We sipped our drinks in silence, each lost in our own world of possibilities.
My phone buzzed again, breaking the stillness.
I glanced at the screen, surprised to see a lawyer's name flashing.
I answered, my voice measured and professional.
The lawyer's voice on the other end was crisp and precise.
He introduced himself as the executor of my late grandfather's estate.
His words were laced with a hint of formality and a touch of mystery.
"Mr. Singhania," he began, "I have been instructed to inform you that you and your wife are the sole beneficiaries of a multimillion-dollar estate. This inheritance comes with certain conditions, which we will discuss further upon your arrival in New York."
My eyes met Sirisha's, her gaze filled with both wonder and apprehension.
I relayed the information to her, watching as her eyes widened with disbelief and a flicker of hope.
"Reyansh, this could change everything for us," Sirisha said, her voice a mix of excitement and caution.
He nodded slowly, the weight of the revelation sinking in, "But what are these conditions? We need to know what we're stepping into."
Her eyes held his, unwavering, "Whatever it is, we'll face it together, won't we?"
