Tempted by My Mom’s Friend

設定:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house. Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much. "Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile. She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink. Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

"See you later, sweetie," my mom said as she gave me one last hug before they left.
"Have fun with Veronica."
I turned back to look at her and smiled.
"I will."
My parents were going on a two-week vacation to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, and they had asked their friend Veronica to house sit.
Veronica had agreed, but only if I was okay with staying with her while they were gone.
I didn’t mind at all.
I liked Veronica.
She was cool, and we always had a lot of fun together.
Plus, it meant that I didn’t have to go with them.
I hated flying, and the thought of doing it for over ten hours just to get to their destination made me want to scream.
They had tried to get me to go with them, but in the end, they accepted my decision.
"Ready to go, Mr. Windsor," their driver, Henry, said as he popped the trunk of the car.
"Have fun, kiddo," my dad said as he ruffled my hair.
I rolled my eyes and pushed his hand away.
"Stop it, old man," I teased him.
He chuckled and shook his head; a small smile playing on his lips.

I stood in the driveway as they got into the car and watched as it pulled away.
The black town car got smaller and smaller until it was just a tiny speck on the horizon.
The sun was high in the late afternoon sky, and I felt its warmth on my skin.
I couldn’t help but smile at the possibilities that lay before me.
No more strict schedules to keep, no more family dinners to sit through, no more curfews to worry about.
It was just me and Veronica for two whole weeks.
I pulled out my phone and sent her a quick text letting her know my parents had left, then went back inside to wait for her arrival.
The house felt different already—quieter, more spacious.
I wandered into the kitchen and grabbed a soda from the fridge.
It was something Mom rarely let me have, so I took a long sip and savored the taste.

I sprawled out on the couch, scrolling through my social media feeds when I heard the sound of a car pulling into the driveway.
I looked out the window and saw Veronica’s car.
She got out and popped the trunk before walking around to pull out several bags of groceries.
She also pulled out a worn cardboard box that was labeled "Games Night."
I watched as she tried to carry everything to the door, but it looked like too much.
She kicked the door with her foot, and I jumped up to let her in.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, smiling brightly.
"Long time no see," I replied, taking one of the bags from her and setting it on the kitchen counter.
"What’s all this?"
I asked as I opened the box and found Monopoly, Scrabble, and several decks of cards.
"Games Night," she said as she dumped all of her bags onto the coffee table.
"I thought we could have some fun. There’s chips, candy, soda—"

She pulled out a few bottles of soda and set them on the counter.
"—all your favorite junk food. Your mom never lets you have any of it." She winked at me as she plopped down on the couch beside me.
"Mom’s not here," she said as she started dealing cards onto the coffee table.
"Ever played Strip Poker?"
"Uh, no," I stammered, caught off guard by her question.
"Relax, I'm kidding," Veronica laughed, giving me a playful nudge.
"But seriously, there's something I need to tell you about your parents' trip."

I sat across from her at the coffee table, watching as she continued to deal out cards.
She stopped and placed them down on the table with a sigh.
She leaned forward, her blue hair falling loose from its bun.
"My mom and dad aren’t really on an anniversary trip," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"They're meeting with divorce lawyers in private."
I felt like I’d been punched in the stomach.
"What? Why?"
I asked, my voice shaking.
"It's not your fault. Your dad's been seeing someone else."
The junk food and games suddenly made sense.
It was all just a distraction.
She didn't want me to worry about what was happening while they were gone.
Tempted by My Mom’s Friend
I felt tears well up in my eyes, but I tried to fight them back.
I didn't want Veronica to see me cry.
But it was no use; they flowed down my cheeks, and I couldn't stop them. Veronica moved beside me on the couch and pulled me into a tight hug.
Her fingers traced circles on my back as she whispered that she'd take care of me, that I didn't need my parents anymore because I had her now.
I pulled away from her embrace and wiped at my eyes with my sleeve.
I realized that everything was about to change.
