I was a guardian angel.
A real, honest-to-God guardian angel.
And I had been for the past two weeks.
I still couldn’t believe it.
Not really.
It was like I was living in a dream, and at any moment, I’d wake up and be back in my old life.
But no matter how many times I pinched myself, I didn’t wake up.
This was my life now.
And I loved it.
I loved everything about it.
Chapter 1

But no matter how many times I pinched myself, I didn’t wake up.
This was my life now.
And I loved it.
I loved everything about it.
Well, almost everything.
I could do things as a guardian angel that I never imagined doing before, and I felt more alive than ever.
Which was weird, considering I was dead.
But Sarah had told me that feeling alive wasn’t the same thing as being alive, and she was right.
Now that I knew who I really was, I felt like my life had purpose.

Now that I knew who I really was, I felt like my life had purpose.
Sarah and I had talked a lot over the past two weeks, and she’d been a huge help to me in learning about my new life and what it meant to be a guardian angel.
She’d become a good friend to me in a short period of time, and we got along really well together.
We’d even gone out for coffee a few times when we weren’t on duty, and it had been fun getting to know her better.

She was older than me, by about two years or so, and she was smart and funny and really nice to be around.
We had a lot in common and got along really well together, so it was easy to talk to her about anything that was on my mind.
Like the prophecy she’d told me about last night when we were on our way back to the castle after an assignment.
I still couldn’t believe it when she told me about the prophecy she’d had a vision of a few days earlier, or who the prophecy was about.
Jamie Reyes was our future king, and he was only sixteen years old right now.
I was a guardian angel.
A real, honest-to-God guardian angel.
And I had been for the past two weeks.

Chapter 2
I could do things as a guardian angel that I never imagined doing before, and I felt more alive than ever.
Which was weird, considering I was dead.
But Sarah had told me that feeling alive wasn’t the same thing as being alive, and she was right.
And there was one thing about this new life of mine that made me feel more alive than anything else . . .
It took all my strength to keep my emotions in check.
But when the love of your life might be one of us . . .
One of us.
Every time I thought of it, my heart swelled with hope.
If he’s one of us, then that means he’s okay.
I knew I had no reason to worry, but I still did.
For some reason, it didn’t seem real.
Even though I’d seen it with my own two eyes, even though I knew Sarah would never lie to me, part of me just couldn’t believe it.
He’s one of us.
But if he’s one of us . . .
No, I wouldn’t think about it.
Not now.
Not when my heart ached just thinking about what it meant.
I’d loved Jamie since the moment I laid eyes on him, but I hadn’t allowed myself to think about it too much, because I knew that if I did, I’d end up doing something stupid.
And I couldn’t do anything stupid.
Not when there was a prophecy involved.
Not when the fate of the world could be at stake.
But even though I hadn’t allowed myself to think about Jamie, or to let my feelings for him take control over my better judgment, I still felt the same way about him that I had all those years ago.
Actually, no.
That wasn’t true.
My feelings had changed.
They’d changed because I’d gotten to know Jamie in a way that no one else did.
Most people saw him as a hot-headed troublemaker who didn’t care about anything or anyone.
But the Jamie I knew was different.
He was brave, and he was kind, and he cared more than anyone else did.
He just didn’t want anyone to know it.
I’d seen him at his worst, and I’d seen him at his best, and no matter what, I’d always been drawn to him by some invisible force, an invisible force that seemed to grow with every moment we spent together.
